Stick Or Twist In Transfer Stakes?

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has the dilemma of whether to stick with his current squad or twist and recruit one or two more players before the season starts.

Posh on Tour - Day 3 - UCD v Posh - Darren Ferguson

Fergie`s number one transfer target has already been bought in the shape of midfielder Jack Payne from Gillingham however with the large price tags put on his star players, he certainly wasn`t expecting someone to come in and prize any of them away.

That is just what has happened though with star striker Dwight Gayle [pictured below] heading to Premiership Crystal Palace. His departure leaves a big hole in the forward line as the majority of forwards remaining in the squad are teenagers with little or no first team experience or players who are not in Fergie`s plans and are on the transfer list!!

Day 3 - Dwight Gayle ball work

After overseeing the first two pre-season matches in the Republic of Ireland, Fergie has decided to see how the current squad progress including the forgotten man Nicky Ajose who scored both goals for Posh against the University College Dublin side on Wednesday evening.

Ajose has rarely featured for Posh since his signing from Manchester United in the summer of 2011 but after starting that season as the main striker, he picked up an injury just half an hour into his debut. It has all been downhill from then for Ajose as he has been farmed out on loan to one team after another. He has played over 50 matches on loan since arriving at London Road scoring just seven goals! Not exactly a prolific record! However, could the brace of goals against UCD kick-start his career again? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, Fergie will run the rule over his squad during pre-season whilst at the same time keeping an eye out for the right recruits to bolster his squad.

“We may try and get one, maybe two into the club but we are going to take our time. I want to see how these lads do,” said Ferguson.

Shaq MacDonald and a few other youngsters definitely have potential but they need to be eased into first team life gently which means we`ll be relying on the likes of Ajose, Barnett and Sinclair to fill the boots of Gayle unless we bring someone else in.

It’s still early days in the transfer window so there is plenty of time to do a deal but should Fergie stick with the squad he has or should he bring more players in?
