What are the Sunderland caretaker manager and players saying about the upcoming match with Peterborough United?

Kevin Ball - interim head coach at Sunderland

“The thing they [players] have to focus on is tomorrow night,” said caretaker boss Kevin Ball to SAFSee. “We didn`t particularly talk about the game tomorrow night this morning, but after training we mentioned it and just said about the importance of the game and what we were doing.

“Before training it never got mentioned because their heads would`ve been spinning a little bit as well, a lot of things going on and I just wanted to watch them in training to see how they performed, see who looked like they were focused and who wasn`t.

Looking at Posh, Ball believes it will be a good challenge for the players: “It`ll be a good test for us. The nice thing is that we are at home and it is up to us to make sure we get the crowd behind us. It`s up to us to make sure things happen and I`d like to think it`ll be a good, open game of football.”

Ball is left with a good sized squad to choose from as he spoke about the build up and team selection: “This morning we had 22 players and I`ll sit down with Robbie who`s going to help us out and we`ll pick the team that we feel is right and we`ll pick the subs that will affect that and there`s going to be one or two people disappointed. They`ll have to understand that they have to be together in everything and just accept the fact that not everybody can play and not everybody can be sub.”

Asked whether he felt the match gave Sunderland a chance to get back to winning ways, Ball stressed that it`s all about how you go about your business: “In terms of that, you want to go out and enjoy the game. However, to enjoy the game you have to work really hard in and out of possession, do the right things.

“Talk about giving 100%, that`s as much as you can give, well that`s how much you should give every game you play. You`d ask them to do that and I`d expect them to demand it from each other as well.

“In terms of the result, we need to make sure we do all that first to give the result a chance to take care of itself.”
