Peterborough United were looking to start their season with a victory in their first competitive fixture of the season. And they comfortably provided that, in the Capital One Cup first round at home to Southend.
The Posh manager decided to start new midfielder Michael Bostwick instead of Grant McCann, and Lee Tomlin was the man chosen to start up front alongside Paul Taylor due to Tyrone Barnett`s injury.
It was Posh who started the brighter of the two teams as they dominated the possession early on. And they took the lead on 12 minutes after a brilliant move. Michael Bostwick`s pinpoint cross-field pass found Joe Newell, he crossed to Boyd. Boyd took a touch and nodded it down to Lee TOMLIN, who stabbed it home.
Southend were almost given a chance to level the game, after a short, bouncing back pass by Lee Frecklington, forced new keeper Bobby Olejnik into action. He managed to beat the chasing striker to the ball, and smash the ball away to safety.
A well weighted ball through by Tomlin found Taylor, who found himself one on one with Southend stopper Cameron Belford, but the on loan goalkeeper saved well. It wasn`t long until TAYLOR found the net though. He ran with the ball from near the half way line, beating two or three players in the process, before cutting inside and finishing well into the bottom corner.
Shortly after, it was 3-0! With what was the goal of the game by Joe NEWELL, who got the ball just outside the area, and curled a fantastic left footed shot over Belford, and right into the far top corner.
Southend`s experienced striker Neil Harris was forced off through injury just before half time. His replacement was former Coventry striker Freddy Eastwood.

It was Southend that threatened early in the second half, and they had one of their two big chances when former Posh target, Kane Ferdinand, saw his header come back into play off the bar, but the rebound was headed over Olejnik`s crossbar.
A good ball through by Lee Tomlin to George BOYD made it 4-0, as the latter slotted home from inside the area just before the hour mark. It was now safe to say, Posh were in the draw for the capital one cup second round.
Southend`s second big chance came from a free kick by Ryan Hall, which again hit the frame of Bobby Olejnik`s goal. But the match was now slowing down, and Posh controlled the closing stages, keeping possession very well, as they had done all game.
The final whistle was blown after 2 minutes of added time, and it was the dream start to the season for the Posh. A win in our opening game certainly gives us confidence ahead of opening day on Saturday.

It was an absolutely fantastic performance by every player, no one could have been faulted. The two younger players, Joe Newell and Kgosi Nthle, both staked their claim for a starting place in Saturday`s team after they both performed very well.
Lee Tomlin and George Boyd were the two best players on the pitch, in a performance that saw Posh dominate from start to finish. The defence looked much more solid than last season, which is undoubtedly, fantastic news.
