Tough Times In Transfer Market

With the season only just over for most clubs, Peterborough United are already finding the going tough in the transfer market.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson requires a new goalkeeper (possibly two), a right back, two midfielders and two forwards as he looks to improve on this seasons squad.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony recently confirmed that both Fergie and Barry Fry were hard at it trying to negotiate fees with clubs and contract deals with players: ‘Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson are working hard behind the scenes to make things happen.

‘The players on our target list excite me and in my opinion will make us even stronger next season.’

Fergie likes to complete his business as soon as possible so the whole squad can report back for pre-season which starts on 2nd July. However, virtually all his targets are also targets for other Championship teams and so he faces a very tough battle to get his first choice players.

Fergie said: ‘We are having ongoing discussions with clubs and players, but I suspect it will be some time before we have any announcements to make, if we make any at all!!

‘We are obviously after good players and because they are good other clubs are after them as well so it has to be a patient process.

‘Ideally we want them before we report back for pre-season training on 2nd July or at the latest when we go to Portugal on 8th July, but nine times out of ten it doesn’t work like that.

‘I’m happy to have Knight-Percival on board though.

‘Nathaniel is one that we have known about for a while. He is someone that I have watched quite a bit and I obviously know a lot about him from my Wrexham connections.

‘I saw him play against Brighton in the FA Cup and he performed very well up against Craig Mackail-Smith.

‘He has decent pace, is a good organiser and is impressive in the air. He is also a left-sided defender which is very important.

‘I spoke to Dean Keates [former Posh midfielder] about him and he was very complimentary. I have also spoken to others in the game that confirmed my feelings about him, so he comes highly recommended.’

‘That gives me three quality centre-backs and I’ll decide whether or not to go for a fourth after watching the younger lads in pre-season.’

Kgosi Ntlhe featured in the final two games of last season and will be hoping to impress Fergie alongside the other youngster Peter Grant and James Sage during pre-season.
