Tranmere 1 Posh 1

Last night I just didn`t have the heart to pen a match review.

We`d just dropped a further two points, up at Tranmere, in our quest to seek an automatic promotion place. That makes it five pints dropped in our last two games, two game sit had been openly suggested were nestling amongst six in February that we should reap maximum points from.

Now it looks as if, despite all Darragh MacAntony`s hopes, a play-off place is a far more realistic target, but is it settling for second best?

I`d say not!

After our promotion last season perhaps we were aiming a little too high dreaming of back-to-back promotions, perhaps such a rapid climb may have had an adverse affect. Perhaps a struggle through the play-offs is a more moral-fibre building experience, leaving you with the realistic awakening that the squad definitely needs strengthening to survive in the Championship.

Here at Vital Posh we`d be interested to hear your thoughts on the matter.

But back to the game, on reflection taking a point at Prenton Park, a ground whereby the hosts had taken 19 points out of a possible 21 recently; doesn`t seem too bad a result. That is until you recall the amount of pressure we applied in the second half, pressure that had Darren Ferguson drooling;

“We got a lucky break for the equaliser – but we were the better side in the second half.”

True our equaliser was a little fortunate with a clearance bouncing off Aaron McLean for Craig Mackail-Smith to rifle home his twenty-first goal of the season but the home defence could have buckled at any time in the second half but for the display of the Tranmere keeper.

True to recent form though, Posh had to mount a come back after Charlie Bennett gave the hosts a 16th minute lead but isn`t that what supporting Posh seems to be all about these days?

Other positive points to take from the match were the return to fitness of James Chester and the display given by Lee Frecklington after he came on as a first half substitute for Chris Whelpdale.

But before we finish we can`t possibly pass up on a comment attributed to the Tranmere manager, Ronnie Moore, who seemed to have a mouthful of sour grapes when he remarked in his post match interview,

“You`re never happy when you only take a point at home. The ref got all the big decisions wrong.”

So it`s two more points dropped or a point gained, depending upon your viewpoint, but with another game coming up fast on Saturday, these are exciting (if a little expensive) times to be a Posh supporter.
