The results are in for the Vital Posh Player of the Season for 2012/2013

After a topsy turvy season which saw Posh start the season in the worst possible way before turning things round and finishing it in promotion form, a final minute goal conceded at play-off chasing Crystal Palace resigned Posh to relegation.

Posh were relegated with 54 points which is a record for a team to get relegated with but there were such small margins between all the teams in the division that the league was so close.

Darren Ferguson was confident at the start of the season that he had the best squad of players he had ever had and at an average age of just 22, his squad was also the youngest in the League!

Given the confidence around the club, no one would have imagined the start Posh would have with seven defeats on the bounce which eventually became 16 defeats in 21 matches before they turned things round.

It was a case of individual error after individual error that caused many goals to be conceded and with ‘Halo-gate’ adding to the problems, Posh were in disarray. Full credit goes to Darren Ferguson who sorted things out and turned things around though as he shipped out the players involved in that late night/ early morning Police incident and come January, probably made one of his best ever permanent signings in striker Dwight Gayle.

Gayle had come in on loan initially and scored seven goals in his first nine matches! Not bad for a 22-year-old who was only in his first real season of League football. Gayle went on to score 13 goals for Posh.

Apart from Gayles scoring record, his touch and movement is excellent and creates space for his fellow players and allows players like Lee Tomlin to make use of the space or make a pass that only Tomlin could. Tomlin still has his outbursts but we are seeing more and more of the quality that he possesses. Tomlin and Gayle have formed an excellent partnership and can only get better if we managed to keep hold of the pair.

After all the trials and tribulations of Joe Lewis and Paul Jones in the goalkeeping department in the previous season, it was nice to have a newcomer to the club in the form of Bobby Olejnik. Signed from Torquay United during the summer, he re-united the Posh fans who had separated into two camps (Jones and Lewis) and although he is far from the finished article, he gives fans a sense of reliability in goal we haven`t really seen for a couple of seasons. He has become a fans favourite and has picked up many Vital Posh Man of the Match awards this season.

Last seasons winner, Craig Alcock, has had an indifferent season. His form in the early part of the season was poor as he suffered from niggling injuries which eventually saw him resigned to watching Posh from the subs bench. He did finally get a chance to regain his place late on in the season which he grabbed with both hands and finished the season off in fine style showing the form that made him the winner last season.

Another player that suffered an injury at the start of the season was captain Tommy Rowe. He sustained a bad shoulder injury in the pre-season win over Crawley Town which kept the influential player out of the Posh side at the start of the season. Whether it was a coincidence or not but just as Rowe returned to the side, the fortunes of Posh changed. Rowe went on to play 31 League matches scoring five goals and has turned into an excellent left sided player or who could grace the majority of Championship teams.
