With the expected departure of Dwight Gayle, will the signing of Jack Payne ease the pain for Posh fans?

Jack Payne v Sheff Weds

Gillingham midfielder Jack Payne is Darren Fergusons number one transfer target but had been put off by the large transfer fee wanted for him. However, with Posh about to receive nearly £5 million for striker Dwight Gayle, could the transfer finally be on the cards?

Things are looking positive after Gillingham announced their teams for their TWO pre-season matches scheduled for tomorrow. Gills manager Martin Allen confirmed every player will get 45 minutes with one or two having to play the whole 90 minutes. However, Jack Payne hasn`t been included in any of the named teams!!

Could that mean Gillingham have agreed to sell the 21-year-old who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Posh?

It will certainly be seen as a boost to the Posh central midfield if it is the case but many fans will still be looking at the forward situation and what, if anything, may happen on that front.

No doubt there will be twists and turns and plenty of rumours between now and the end of the transfer window but there is one thing for certain, Fergie will know what he wants but it may all rely on Barry Fry getting rid of the unwanted players first!
