Peterborough United have had a £1 million plus add-ons bid for a striker rejected according to reports!

Jason Cummings of Hibernian

Reports coming out of Scotland are linking Posh with a big bid for Hibernian striker Jason Cummings.

The offer is said to be in the region of £1 million with add-ons taking the overall bid worth around £1.7 million!!

There has been a lot of interest in the 21-year-old over the summer who was heading in to the final year of his contract. However, he has since agreed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2020 so it is a surprise that if these latest reports are true, that Posh left their bid until after a new deal had been struck?unless that is because Posh have finally realised that the weakest part of their squad is the forwards?

The reported bid was submitted yesterday [4th August] but both clubs are keeping a stony silence on the rumours going round. The Easter Road outfit have declined to comment on the matter while Posh Director of Football Barry Fry could not be reached for comment and Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony declined to comment!

Posh lost striker Lee Angol to a leg break in the very first pre-season match and have loaned another striker out to Nuneaton. They`ve also sold winger Jon Taylor this week to Championship side Rotherham United for around £500,000. Taylor finished joint top scorer for Posh last season.

With three players now unavailable to Posh boss Grant McCann and Posh struggling to score many goals in pre-season, it`s no real surprise that Posh have been looking for alternative solutions to their scoring problem. Darragh MacAnthony always backs his manager when he needs new players but is £1.7 million a bit too much for a League One side who had crowds around the 4,500 mark last season?

Cummings definitely knows where the goal is after he scored 46 goals in 109 appearances (17 as a substitute) for the Scottish Championship club and with those statistics and his young age, he would definitely be an asset at Posh.

As things stand though, the bid has been rejected but it doesn`t mean that it`s the end of the story!
