So near, yet so far

Peterborough United came within a whisker of taking unbeaten Premiership side Everton to extra time in this Carling Cup cracker.

The Posh under the watchful eye of new Chairman Darragh MacAnthony started brightly with Trevor Benjamin going close early on.

Everton soon took the lead though, through Dangerman James Beattie. A cross came over and his header deflected off Jude Stirling and past Mark Tyler. It was a cruel blow.

Liam Davis will feel he should have had a penalty soon after when he was upended in the box. TV replays seemed to show that it was a penalty but it was hard for the ref to have given it.

Beattie could have doubled his tally soon after half time with a 25 yard effort but soon after POSH were level.

A set piece came over and Trevor Benjamins powerful header crossed the line before being hacked clear. The linesman had seen it and gave the goal. Turner could have given POSH an unbelievable lead soon after but he couldn’t convert.

Just as extra time looked inevitable, Tim Cahill pounced on a Mark Tyler spill to win the match for Everton.

Heartbreak for POSH but they did themselves proud.
