Peterborough United have today announced that Jack Payne will take on the role of club captain. The 22 year old central midfielder was captain of his old side, Gillingham, and has been an important player since moving to London Road.

Darren Ferguson seemed happy with his decision, and had this to say when speaking to theposh.com:

‘I spoke with Jack this week about how impressed I have been with the way he has come back this summer and how he leads by example, influencing the young lads and that played a massive part in my thinking.

Sometimes you give the responsibility to a player and they buckle under the pressure, but Jack is a leader on the field and although he is only 22 he successfully captained his former club Gillingham and he was delighted to accept the responsibility.’

Posh chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, also spoke about the selection:

‘Jackie is very mature for his age and although he will be one of the youngest captains in the Football League, he is a leader and he leads from example.` ‘I spent some time with Jack this week discussing my expectations of him and the team for the coming season and one thing`s for sure, he leads from the front and is highly respected by the rest of the squad, which is exactly what you require from your captain.’

Jack Payne seemed surprised about the appointment, saying:

‘I wasn`t expecting it to be honest, but I must say it`s a massive honour to be named captain.’

”I`m a talker regardless so it won`t be too much different for me on the pitch, but this is massive and a very proud moment that I will relish.’

We would like congratulate Jack on become captain, and wish him all the best in his new role!
