Disappointment at the Vicarage

Peterborough United were looking for a third win on the trot away from home but came away win a 1-0 defeat thanks to a soft 90th minute penalty!

Watford 1 – 0 Peterborough United
Location: Vicarage Road
Date: 20th October, 2012
Attendance: 15,950 (1,415 Posh fans)

What a poor, poor game! The first half has to go down as one of the most boring Posh matches for many a year with very few chances created by either side.

Possibly the best part of the first half was the tribute paid by the Posh fans to Tommy Robson who is recovering from a heart operation in Papworth Hospital.

The second half was more of a spectacle and at times it was a backs against the wall defensive display with players blocking shots and keeper Bobby Olejnik [pictured below] making vital saves while Posh create few chances.

George Boyd had the best chance of the game for Posh after a pinpoint cross from substitute Saido Berahino found the midfielders head but Boyd could only direct his header straight at former Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia! That was the only downside to his performance as he had another decent outing.

It has to be said it was another disappointing performance by the forwards and most of the midfielders. The midfielders simply weren`t creative enough, well, not until former captain Grant McCann came on, and the forwards were simply poor.

Are the forwards lacking in confidence? Are they good enough for the Championship?

Posh fans vented their displeasure when Berahino entered the match as he replaced Sinclair again even though his fellow forward Barnett is the player most fans wanted to be replaced.

It seems Barnett is one of Fergies favourites or is it a case again of the Scot being stubborn in an attempt to prove he was right to splash out over a million pounds to bring the player in to the club??

It did look like Posh were finally going to finish a match in a goalless draw for the first time in 132 matches until McCann`s pathetic back heel pass was intercepted by Watford. They broke away but it looked like Posh had countered the threat when the ball ended up at Kane Ferdinands feet. For some inexplicable reason, Ferdinand [pictured below] took the ball back towards his goal and into the penalty area before being dispossessed and finally conceding a very soft penalty.

The defeat leaves Posh rooted to the bottom of the Championship and although we are still just one point behind Ipswich Town, we are five points from safety and although there is still a long way to go, we are almost a quarter of the way through the season!!

We shouldn`t get too down just yet as the team did have an upsurge in form prior to the international break. We just have to hope that this form comes back on Tuesday when we face a very difficult game against “unbeaten” Huddersfield Town.

Surely this next match will see a change in personnel? Loanee Saido Berahino [pictured below] is pushing for a start while Grant McCann could force his way back into the starting line-up.
