Posh secured their second place in the league with a 2-1 win, over Hartlepool, at Victoria Park.

Indeed, with the MK Dons being held to a draw by Swindon, the gap between ourselves and the team that is seen as our closest rivals for that automatic second promotion spot has grown.

Whether it`s a turning point as we approach the end of the season remains to be seen.

Posh welcomed back Gabriel Zakunai for the clash and as ha soften been the case in recent games, took an early lead.

It came in the 12th minute when Dean Keates curled a David Beckham style free kick over the wall, from the edge of the area, after Aaron McLean had been brought down by Collins.

But any pretensions Posh had of coasting to a victory were rudely interrupted by a freak goal.

After Hartlepool had exerted a bit of pressure they forced a corner and from the corner Monkhouse somehow curled it directly into the goal, a cruel blow for the Posh defence.

Thankfully, Posh were to retake the lead almost straight after the break in the 48th minute.

Chris Whelpdale, down the right, saw his shot deflected straight into the path of George Boyd.

Boyd, once again playing alongside McLean up front, couldn`t quite believe his luck and gleefully slotted home his 10th goal of the season and his 50th of his career.

Despite some late pressure by the home side, Posh hung on well and the three points were in the bag.
