Last Time Out at Oakwell

With just five matches remaining of the 2009/10 season, Posh needed to win every single game whilst relying on the teams directly above them to lose every game in order to stay in the Championship. Unfortunately it was not to be as a draw at Oakwell confirmed relegation for Posh to League One after only one season in the Championship.

With nothing to lose, Posh started brightly in their Argentinean style shirt and could`ve taken an early lead following a cross by Dominic Green was headed wide by Tommy Rowe.

Two long range efforts were dealt with easily by James McKeown before Ryan BENNETT put Posh ahead after only five minutes when latching onto a header from Exodus Geohaghon.

A defensive calamity soon presented Barnsley with a chance to equalise which they duly took when Iain HUME tucked the ball into the net at the back post on seven minutes.

Few chances were created until the half hour mark when Barnsley upped the pace and had efforts by Luke Potter from a corner and then Martin Devaney on 33 minutes before Potter had another chance five minutes later but he couldn`t direct his header on target.

McKeown was certainly the busier of the two keepers as he was forced into a point blank save from Macken after an unstoppable run down the left by Hammill.

Posh did create a good chance just before half time when Sergio Torres had an effort blocked by Stephen Foster before Geohaghon was booked for a foul on Hume.

Half-time: Barnsley 1 – 1 Peterborough United

Romone McCrae replaced Bennett at half time and he had the first chance of the second half when he nearly headed the ball into his own net!

Lee Frecklington tried to give Posh the lead again but former Posh keeper Luke Steele made an easy save before he had a long range effort at goal go wide moments later.

Posh lost forward Mills to a hamstring injury as manager Jim Gannon was forced to bring on a player he tried to release in Craign Mackail-Smith!

The game had definitely changed with both teams pressing for a second goal which saw two efforts each for Reuben Reid and Mackail-Smith while efforts by Hume, Hammill and Devaney for Barnsley failed to increase the goal count.

Mackail-Smith was determined to show Gannon why the Posh fans loved him and why he should still be at the club as he caused problems for the Tykes but it was Tommy ROWE that finally managed to break the deadlock when he thundered home a shot from 25-yards.

Despite the goal, home keeper Steele was having an inspired game against his former club as he denied Posh chance after chance. Torres had another chance saved by Steele before denying Reid.

In an effort to stem the tide, Barnsley made a triple substitution and it certainly did the trick as just four minutes later, HUME finished off a move by rounding McKeown and slotting the ball into the empty net.

Posh could`ve snatch a winner though as chances fell to Reid, who fired over, and a 25-yard effort by Frecklington went wide of the goal before another Mackail-Smith effort was superbly saved by Steele.
