Last Time Out
The last time Posh travelled to Leicester was two seasons ago on a Tuesday evening. Posh had had a disappointing start to the season (although it only got worse throughout the season!) and were sitting in 21st place with just 3 points from 6 games. Leicester on the other hand were in the final play-off place with 11 points from 6 games.
In front of 21, 485 fans, the match ended in a 1-1 draw in what was a story of two penalties.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson named an unchanged starting line-up for the Championship clash at the Walkers Stadium against Leicester City, who made one change to their side with Paul Gallagher replacing Lloyd Dyer on the left hand side of midfield.
Craig Mackail-Smith had the first effort following a misguided header from Wayne Brown, but goalkeeper Chris Weale was able to make an easy save.
A 25-yard effort from George Boyd went wide of the target on seven minutes Posh made most of the early running. Lee Frecklington was next to try his luck as he was inches away from the target after 11 minutes.
The post came to Leicesters rescue when Whelpdale who cut inside from the right before unleashing a 20-yard shot which struck the outside of the post.
Toumani Diagouraga, aka “Dave”, saw his poor effort saved after good work from Mackail-Smith moments later.
Leicester had their first effort on 20 minutes when Danny N`Guessan shot wide following a mix-up between keeper Joe Lewis and Craig Morgan.
Posh were awarded a penalty after 30 minutes when McLean was hacked down in the box by Brown. George BOYD sent Weale the wrong way to give Posh a deserved lead.
Matty Fryatt almost snatched an undeserved equaliser when he had a header cleared off the line by Morgan 60 seconds after Posh had taken the lead.
Fryatt then beat the offside trap but blazed his shot as the Posh back four were waiting for the flag!
Leicester had upped their game by this point and were putting more and more pressure on the Posh goal but Oakley found his effort saved superbly by Lewis. Posh had a four on one opportunity on the counter attack, but after Boyd played in Frecklington, the midfielder took too much time and the chance was snuffed out.
At the other end, Lewis was keeping Posh ahead with yet another superb save diving to his right to deny Paul Gallagher before tipping a dangerous Neilson cross away from danger.
Half-time: Leicester City 0 – 1 Posh
Leicester didn’t take too long to level the scores after the break as Tom Williams handled a Neilson cut-back after Oakley had struck the underside of the crossbar. FRYATT took the penalty and saw his effort hit the back of the net.
A head injury to Whelpdale meant Posh were forced into a substitution which saw Paul Coutts replace the midfielder.
Mackail-Smith fired a shot wide with his left-foot from 25-yards on 77 minutes.
The referee was having more of an influence on the game as he was penalising every minor infringement and booked a number of players including Frecklington, McLean and Diagouraga.
An inswinging centre from Gallagher was met by Howard by he shot wide on 84 minutes.
In added time, Paul Coutts was inches away from his first goal for Posh but his shot went inches past the post.
Full-time: Leicester 1 – 1 Posh
The draw saw Posh stay in 21st place, but Leicester dropped down one place to 7th.
