A national newspaper is reporting that Peterborough United are asking for £5 million for striker Conor Washington!

Conor Washington scores the first goal v Sheffield United

After turning down at least three bids from Championship sides, it was widely assumed that Posh were holding out for a bid of at least £3 million.

However, a national football newspaper is now reporting that the fee Posh want for Washington is £5 million!!

That fee would put the current Posh striker in the same bracket as former Posh strikers Britt Assombalonga and Dwight Gayle!

Is he really as good as them? Where did the Football League paper get their £5 million fee from? The newspaper also claim that two Championship sides are prepared to meet that figure!

Of course, it could all be codswallop but it is also rumoured more Championship sides have entered the race for Washington. Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday are the ones reported to have joined the race alongside sides such as QPR, Hull City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reading, Cardiff City, Leeds United and Birmingham City.

When the talk was waiting for £3 million for the 23-year-old, most Posh fans said they`d snap the bidders hand off to get that sort of money for a striker who is in his first ever purple patch since entering the Football League.

At the start of the season, many fans were frustrated with the striker who scored just 2 goals in his first 16 appearances of the season! In the last 15 games, he has netted 13 times which has obviously got the notice of teams higher up the League.

He is still fairly young and is still improving and credit has to go to Posh boss Graham Westley for massively improving his strike rate in the time he has been managing the club but is he just going through this “purple patch” or is he showing his true potential?

Whatever it is, it would be wise for Posh to cash in to bring in some much needed money even if Chairman Darragh MacAnthony insists we don`t need to sell anyone. It would allow Posh to reduce some of their debts but also enable Westley to bring in replacements.

The next two weeks will surely be interesting as Washington isn`t the only player attracting attention. Jack Baldwin may have only just returned from a long term injury but the performances he has put in has certainly reminded everyone just what quality he is and it is only a matter of time before he moves on to a bigger club. Marcus Maddison is also attracting Championship interest while the form of Chris Forrester has been impressive since he joined the club earlier this season.

Once again there were a host of clubs at the ABAX Stadium for the drab goalless draw with Southend United on Saturday. Along with those sides mentioned above, Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Premiership side Bournemouth were all in attendance with the Cherries particularly interested in Baldwin!

Don`t forget to vote in the following polls that are running at the time of print:
