Peterborough United have announced their third manager in 12 months but this time they’ve installed popular former player Grant McCann as the boss.

Grant McCann

After having two stints as caretaker boss last season winning three matches and drawing the other one and transforming a poor side into a scoring machine, it comes as no surprise that Posh have announced that Grant McCann is to take over managerial duties on a permanent basis.

In a live Press Conference which was also transmitted live on YouTube, Chairman Darragh MacAnthony introduced his third manager in twelve months but is by far and away the most popular choice of the three.

Speaking ahead of the introduction to his new manager, MacAnthony said how the last 8 weeks was the toughest owning the club in his 9 years but he’s now looking the buck the trend on everything and get back to where we want to be without overdoing the hype!

MacAnthony spoke about issues with the stadium and training ground and also said that shortly after Westley departed, a deal to hire a manager currently in the Championship was agreed! However, he began to reflect on what has happened at the club over the years and what he is truely like as a person. It was those thoughts along with discussions with many people at the club that the bold move would be to name Grant McCann as the new manager.

When MacAnthony returned to the UK and talked to McCann, he asked McCann who should he bring in as the new manager and he said ‘him’. McCann highlighted numerous other former captains that are now managing successful clubs such as Gary Caldwell at Wigan Athletic who have just won League One and Neil Harris who is one game away from taking Millwall to the League One play-Off final after winning the first leg 3-1 at Bradford City.

The view of McCann certainly got MacAnthony thinking and in the end, he decided to offer McCann a four-year contract as manager of Posh.

MacAnthony enthused about his new manager when saying that he speaks a lot of sense, he is a young manager who knows how he wants to play and has a football philosophy. He also said McCann would work night and day for the club which is something Posh haven’t had for a good number of years. We haven’t had a manager for a long time that gave his all, Grant will do that! In fact, MacAnthony has so much confidence in McCann that he’s slapped a big compensation clause in his contract should any clubs come after him. That compensation figure is £2 million!

The Chairman does expect McCann to make mistakes but we need to allow him to learn and grow but we also know we want promotion. We have a very good young squad but we’re lacking in a few key pieces. The first XI are up there with the best but when we’re down to bare bones we struggled badly so we know what we have to do.

Many Posh fans expected Dave Farrell and Mark Tyler to be in the management team and they are but neither of them are the number two! Farrell will be the Under 21 coach while Tyler will be the goalkeeping coach. It was also announced that Jack Collison was to become the Under 18 manager.

So who will be the new number two?

Well, it will be a ‘fresh face’ at the club and negotiations are currently ongoing but the person concerned is someone who has won promotion before and is currently coaching in the Premier League.

McCann, Farrell, Tyler, Collison and this mystery number two are all promotion winners. They’ve been there and done it and have that experience that we need and who the players can look up to.

Promotion is the aim and some will argue that he has no experience but did Darren Ferguson, the most successful manager in the MacAnthony era, have any managerial experience.
