Firstly, I should apologise for the lateness of the match report!
Whilst I’ll always strive to post a match report up the same day as the match at the weekend, travelling logistics, combined with a requirement for sleep, contrive to delay night game reports until the day after.
So, the day after the fixture we’re still coming to terms with two dropped points, or is it a point gained?
After our fine recent form, I don’t mind admitting I thought we’d beat Brighton but perhaps I was over-ambitious, perhaps I should have taken heed of Darren Ferguson’s words and been a little more cautious, or perhaps I should have realised that Brighton, under the leadership of Mickey Adams, would come to London Road and put numbers behind the ball, determined to frustrate us and determined to deprive the Posh support of the action they’ve been accustomed to in recent games at London Road.
Darren Ferguson again decided to leave Aaron McLean on the bench whilst there was also no place in the starting eleven for club captain Micah Hyde. With a crowd of under six thousand eagerly awaiting the kick-off, a disappointing turn out in my opinion, little did we know that the referee Steve Bratt would be someone who’d make a name for himself.
As early as the thirteenth minute he incurred the wrath of the Posh faithful by disallowing a Craig Morgan header, apparently Morgan had committed an offence, pushing Brighton defender Matt Richards.
The disallowed goal seemed to set up a pattern for the match that saw very few clear cut chances. Morgan again went close soon after the disallowed goal whilst Charlie Lee and Dominic Green also had chances that livened up the home support.
Brighton, although having almost an equal share of possession, rarely troubled the Posh defence, in the first half, with their best chance perhaps falling to Glenn Murray who blazed over when well placed. Although Kevin McLeod did force a fine save from Joe Lewis in the second half
So back to Mr Bratt, he may have earned a few points booking Robbie Savage but in booking a further five players he hardly endeared himself to the crowd and I wasn`t the only one who cheered when he limped off in the seventy-third minute to be replaced by the fourth official.
Nevertheless, a point is a point and it’s now time to focus on the visit of Huddersfield Town this Saturday. Last night Huddersfield went down 5-3 at Hartlepool after leading 3-2 with ten minutes to go, perhaps we’ll get a little more goal mouth action on Saturday!
