Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson is pleased to see the return of injured duo Tommy Rowe and Joe Newell.
Posh were without their influential captain in last weekend`s draw at Crewe following an ankle injury he picked up the week before in the defeat to Crawley. Rowe was forced to play on (or should that be hobble on) in the Crawley match as Posh had used all their substitutes and was little more than a spectator.
He has now recovered from the injury and is hopeful of winning his place back in the team for this weekend`s battle of last season`s relegated teams.
“We`re pretty optimistic that he`s going to be alright for the game,” confirmed Ferguson. “He`s done a lot of one-on-one stuff with the physio and a little bit with the group. Tomorrow [Friday] we`ll look for him to train and hope there`s no reaction.”
Fergie has been pleased with the way Rowe had gone about his business when playing in midfield this season: “He enjoys playing in there, he looks like a threat in terms of getting a goal so he does bring a lot to the team there`s no question about that. He`s also my captain.”
Rowe isn`t the only one returning from injury as youngster Joe Newell has also recovered from the hand injury that has seen him miss out in the last few weeks. Newell played in the midweek win over local rivals Cambridge United
“He did very well,” said a pleased Fergie when discussing Newell. “He played in a couple of positions in the game that I wanted to have a look at. He`s a good player Joe, everyone`s fully aware of that but he`s not had a great start to the season but it`s good to see him back.
“He had 80 minutes against Cambridge and we`re looking to get another game next week for all the ones that have not been playing at first team level but it`ll bring him on [fitness-wise], there`s no question of that. He`s looked fairly sharp but games are different to training which is why it was important he got that time on the pitch.
“I`ve also got Grant [McCann] that can play on the left or as the deepest one so I`ve got plenty of options in midfield.
