Posh 1 Millwall 0

Boxing Day and a fixture against promotion rivals Millwall. What better way is there to blow away the memories of the 4-0 drubbing received against Leicester City last weekend.

Incidentally, Posh would be chasing their first Boxing Day win for twelve years, the last one being in 1996!

Well that was the plan and it worked to perfection as Posh secured all three points with a 1-0 victory in front of a bumper crowd of 9,351

Darren Ferguson, having to make do without Gabriel Zakuani until January, chose to partner Charlie Lee with Craig Morgan with Chris Westwood, everyone`s tip for the role, confined to the bench.

The first half was played at a frantic pace and it was Posh that took the lead midway through the fist half when Aaron McLean scored his tenth goal of the season after an assist from Craig Mackail-Smith.

Prior to the goal, Mclean had looked lively and had already seen a couple of efforts blocked or fizz wide.

Matters were made worse for the visitors in the thirtieth minute when Tony Craig was dismissed for a challenge on Chris Whelpdale, there looked to be a hint of an elbow involved.

Millwall, now down to ten men, had barely seriously threatened the Posh goal with Joe Lewis dealing comfortably with any efforts coming his way. Posh were enduring the slightly greater share of the possession and hopefully a second goal wouldn`t be too long coming.

As half time approached Charlie Lee headed a corner wide and Mackail-Smith saw a shot blocked. Half time, a 1-0 lead and all was well.

The second half, although competitive, wasn`t to see that crucial second goal. Millwall started brightly and Lewis had to react smartly to clutch a cross from Barron.

Mackail-Smith then fired wide from the edge of the area before Alexander fired well over from a long way out for our visitors. Midway through the half Neil Harris was introduced to a great reception from the travelling supporters.

Posh continued to push forward and Boyd drilled a shot wide before Forde produced a save to deny the same player and when Lewis saved from Martin, in the ninety-third minute, the points were ours.

Three points in the bag and a chance to gather three more with a visit to Cheltenham on Sunday.
