The ‘Fat Lady` didn`t quite get to sing thanks to QPR depriving Sheffield Wednesday of a win but after our latest loss, this tie to title chasing Newcastle, it really is only a matter of time.
Against Newcastle, Posh started the better of the two sides and even had the temerity to take the lead when Dominic Green capitalised on a poor clearance from Harper to score with only eleven minutes on the clock.
Sergio Torres could have doubled the lead a couple of minutes later, if he had of done could the final scenario have been different?
On the back of that wasted chance, Newcastle slowly started to get to grips with the London Road surface. Kevin Nolan forced Lewis into a save and the keeper repeated that feat when a good ball in, from Pancrate, saw Nolan miss from eight yards out.
But, with the game into first half stoppage time, Newcastle got level. A Jose Enrique through ball saw Nolan score his fourteenth goal of the season.
If Posh thought they could keep the title chasing Geordies at bay they were mistaken as three minutes into the second half a free kick from Joey Barton was floated over the wall and past Joe Lewis.
At 2-1 ahead the travelling Geordie Army were keenly listening in for news of the fixture at Ashton Gate whereby they knew that if Nottingham Forest were to lose then promotion would be theirs.
Just before the hour mark, Newcastle increased the lead through Shola Ameobi who beat Lewis from twenty-five yards when the keeper should really have done better than palm it into the side netting.
There was no way back for Posh now although Liam Dickinson did reduce the arrears with a smart header fourteen minutes from the end.
In the end, neither side learnt its fate although it would take mathematical miracles for Newcastle not to go up and for Posh not to go down.
But, if Newcastle do get promoted, would they survive in the Premier League?
Here`s what Jim Gannon thinks,
“Can Newcastle survive in the Premier League? That is the big question. They have every right to be in the top division but everyone knows how hard it is to go up, even if you`re an outstanding side.”
And as for the Posh performance, Jim commented,
“We were excellent early on – probably the best since I`ve been here. But we looked leaden-footed in the second half.”
And so it`s on to Barnsley this Easter Monday, will our fate be sealed?
