Posh 2 Oldham 2

Posh squandered a two goal lead to share the spoils with Oldham this afternoon.

On reflection it has to be two points lost rather than a point gained and on a day when some of our closest rivals also slipped up, it`s a bitter pill to swallow.

For the fixture, played out in front of a crowd of 6,219 at London Road, Darren Ferguson was able to call on the services of injury doubts Gabriel Zakuani, Russell Martin and Tom Williams. Andrew Crofts, who was cup tied last week, was also recalled to the midfield as Posh looked to make it sixteen games unbeaten.

The first half was entertaining forty-five minutes full of action. Posh didn`t have long to wait to take the lead when the unfortunate Stefan Stam turned a ball into his own net giving Posh yet another own goal this month.

The early goal should have seen Posh capitalise on a hesitant Oldham start but Posh were to rue a golden missed opportunity when Aaron McLean saw Fleming save his penalty.

However, we didn`t have to wait long for another chance to double our lead when the referee, Mr Williamson awarded us a second penalty. This time Craig Mackail-Smith took the responsibility.

Unfortunately, it was the same outcome; the net wasn`t to bulge from the penalty spot as Mackail-Smith hit the post. Fortunately McLean was on hand to bury the rebound.

At 2-0 up we should have been looking at a comfortable afternoon but it wasn`t to be. Lee Hughes pulled a goal back for Oldham five minutes before the break after Allott had scuffed his initial shot.

The second half saw Williams replaced with Charlie Lee but it was to be Oldham that were to reap the rewards of a gritty performance when Hughes scored his second goal of the afternoon.

Liddell, on for the injured Jones in the first half, took a set piece on the hour mark and Hughes reacted smartly to tuck the ball in. London Road fell silent bar the celebrations of the travelling Oldham supporters.

It`ll certainly be interesting to hear what Darren Ferguson has to say about matters in his after-match press conference.
