Peterborough United have announced that they have signed 20 year old midfielder, Marcus Maddison, from Gateshead. There has been a large amount of speculation regarding the versatile midfielder, and his move to London Road has finally been confirmed.

Maddison

The former Newcastle United trainee was released by the Toon in 2013, following a loan spell at Blyth Spartans in 2012/2013. He spent a short amount of time at SPL club St Johnstone, but failed to make a first team appearance. He signed for Gateshead at the start of the 2013/2014 season and made his mark at the non league club, especially at the tail end of last season, and finished as the second top goal scorer with 10 goals. He also has 2 England C caps to his name.

Darragh MacAnthony expressed his excitement at the signing on Twitter, saying:

‘First there was George Boyd, he was something special & loved. Then came Lee Tomlin, special, talented & a tad mad…but a player. Then…..

I’m delighted to intro Marcus Maddison,a talented 20 yr old who can play wide & number 10 role. Goals/Assists/Flair!

Thanks to @GatesheadFC for helping make this deal happen & one all parties were happy with. Good luck with promotion bid this year!’

Darren Ferguson also spoke about the signing when speaking to www.theposh.com; he had this to say:

He is a really good player and I really like him. He is a good age, 20-years-old, fits the bill in terms of what we are after. He has been to Newcastle, gone to Gateshead and done very well. He is a player that has had a go at the big time, didn’t quite work out as he had hoped but he has gone into the non-league and is on his way back up again.

He has come to our attention, we have had him watched and done our homework and is a very talented boy. He can play on the right, up front, on the left or in the number 10 role. He has two decent feet, but his left-foot is definitely better.

He has good balance, good skill, pace and we feel this could be a really good signing for us. The one thing we like about him when we watched him was the positions that he takes up. He understands the game. He plays in between people, he knows how to find space and he can score goals.

‘It is important that he understands how we play. We have different formations and he will fit in well. I am pleased to have him on board and looking forward to working with him,’

So, another young, hungry talent from the lower leagues joins the club, to aid what is already a young squad with plenty of flair and goals! Will this be the last we see from Posh in this window, or does the Chairman have another signing up his sleeve in the last 5 days of the market?
