Peterborough United won their first piece of silverware in the new Steve Evans Posh-era after completing a comfortable three-nil victory over Kettering Town.

Young striker Matty Stevens opened the scoring for Posh against the side who he scored 30 goals for last season while on loan. That goal earned him the accolade of top scorer for Posh in pre-season. New striker Matty Godden grabbed the other two with the second coming from the penalty spot in the second half.

The match was a prime example of how Posh will utilise their squad in the coming season when playing Under 23 matches as this match combined many first-team players who didn’t get on the pitch last weekend plus a few youth team members.

Callum Cooke, who only signed for Posh on Monday, made his debut and it was one that delighted boss Steve Evans who said after the game: “What an accomplished player. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s physical, he’s got pace, two good feet.”

Goalkeeper Conor O’Malley produced a few good saves during the game to keep a clean sheet and also stake a claim for a starting place on Saturday in the League opener against Bristol Rovers.

With the pre-season now complete, we can finally look forward to the start of the new campaign and to what will hopefully be a successful one ending with another trophy.
