The man in charge of the Capital One Cup first round tie between Portsmouth and Peterborough United is BRENDAN MALONE.

Brendan Malone

Posh have bad memories of the last time Brendan Malone refereed them as it came on Boxing Day last season when they travelled to Northampton to face Coventry City.

The match was evenly fought out with the Sky Blues leading 3-2 with the match heading in to the dying moments when Shaun Brisley and everyone else in the ground thought Brisley had leveled things?everyone apart from the referee and his assistant!

The goal the officials missed

Shockingly neither of the officials saw the ball cross the goal line by at least a foot with Malone waving play-on. That is what Coventry did as they went up the other end to seal a 4-2 victory while many Posh players went to remonstrate to the referee and his assistant. No cards were issued in the match.

Malone also officiated Pompey last season when he took charge of their away match at Cheltenham in September. The match finished 2-2 with Pompey receiving the only yellow card of the match.

Wiltshire-based Malone has been refereeing for over twenty years progressing through the Salisbury and District, Wiltshire, Wessex and Western Leagues and the Blue Square divisions. He spent 10 years on the Football League line and is now in his fifth season in the middle.

Last season, Malone refereed 30 matches, issuing 70 yellow cards and 3 red cards.

Malone was the fourth official of the Derby County v Rotherham United match on the opening day of the season which finished 1-0 to the Rams.

The last match Malone took charge of was the League Two clash between Morecambe and Bury on the last day of last season. The match endess goalless while one yellow card was issued to the home side.

The last League One match Malone took charge of was at the end of April when he officiated the clash between Coventry City and Wolves. The match finished 1-1 with the Sky Blues receiving the only yellow card of the match.

The assistant referees for the Pompey v Posh clash are Mark Mellor and Gavin Muge. The fourth official is Graham Kane.
