The man in charge of the Sky Bet EFL League One match between Walsall and Peterborough United is MARK HAYWOOD.

Michael Bostwick receives the coin from referee Mark Haywood v Colchester

West Yorkshire-based official Mark Haywood, married with four daughters, began refereeing in 1993. He decided to become a referee after being challenged by a work colleague who was already a match official and afterwards said: “I took the course and learnt more in six weeks than I had seen in 28 years as a fan.”

Haywood rose through the West Yorkshire and Northern Premier Leagues to reach the national list of assistant referees in 2002. In 2006, Haywood was promoted into the national list of referees and he has since refereed both the FA Vase and FA Trophy Quarter-Finals, and the 2010 Unibond League Final.

In 2015, Haywood was in charge of the League One play-off match between Chesterfield and Preston North End. The Lilywhites won one-nil thanks to a James Beckford sixth minute goal.

The Saddlers have already had the pleasure of Mr Haywood this season when they traveled to Leicester City to face their under 23 side in the EFL Trophy. That match, in early November, saw the Saddlers win the clash one-nil thanks to a 58th minute goal by Amadou Bakayoko. No cards were shown in the match.

That win was one of eleven Walsall matches Haywood has officiated down the years of which they`ve won six times, losing just twice!

Posh have had Haywood on 16 occasions winning nine times. They`ve also drawn twice while losing five times.

The last time Posh had Haywood referee one of their matches was last October when they traveled to the West Country to face Bristol Rovers. Rovers took the lead through a Matty Taylor penalty but were level just five minutes later when Shaq Coulthirst scored a rare goal. Posh nicked all three points though when Tom Nichols hit the winner in the 90th minute! Two yellow cards were shown in the match with both of them going to Posh players.

So far this season, Haywood has taken charge of 27 matches, showing 95 yellow cards and 5 red cards!

The last match Haywood took charge of was last weekend when Blackpool had a surprise four-one win over promotion chasing Carlisle United! Four yellow cards were issued in the match with three of them going to Tangerines players.

The last League One match Haywood refereed was nearly a month ago when Shrewsbury Town won one-nil at home against Oldham Athletic. Freddie Ladapo scored the only goal of the game while all three yellow cards shown in the match went to the visitors.

The assistant referees for the Saddlers v Posh clash are Richard Bartlett and Alan Clayton. The fourth official is John Farries.
