Vital Posh looks at the latest news coming out of Peterborough United over the past week and also what their rival teams in League One are up to.
NEW HOME KIT LAUNCHED
Posh have finally released pictures of the new home kit they`ll be wearing in the coming season.
The Nike kit is the same blue as last season but features more prominent white down the chest and on the sleeve. It`s a nice clean look and one which should go down well with the majority of Posh fans (even though it`s not the real “Posh” blue!).
PRINCEBUILD SPONSOR BACK OF SHIRTS
Posh have announced a new back of the shirt sponsor in the form of local building company Princebuild.
The logo will adorn the backs of the home and away strips for the 2013/14 season so could this mean yet another new kit next season if the deal is for one year?
ALL SQUARE IN IRELAND
Posh ended their tour of the Republic of Ireland with a second successive draw. The draw with UCD follows up the draw against Irish League basement side Shelbourne.
Fergie again fielded two different sides in each half although Kane Ferdinand and Emile Sinclair were both substituted half-way through the second half and were replaced by Tyrone Barnett and Michael Richens.
Posh fell behind in the first half through a very scrappy goal while the second goal was just comical. Young goalkeeper Alex Lynch had the ball fed back to him but he dallied on the ball too long allowing Dean Clarke to close him down and as Lynch eventually kicked the ball, it hit Clarke and rebounded into the back of the net!
Two-nil down to a struggling Irish League team was not an ideal situation after drawing the previous night to the bottom of the table side. However, there was a surprise hero in the form of Nicky Ajose who scored two excellent goals which the UCD goalkeeper stood no chance with.
The 2-2 draw followed the 1-1 draw earlier in the afternoon by the Posh Under 18`s. The under 18`s fell behind to a UCD U19`s side, but 16-year-old Ty Phillips used his power and pace to get free and slot the ball home for the equaliser.
The Posh Under 18`s finished their tour off in fine style though winning 3-0 against Longford Under 19`s. Jack Hutchins opened the scoring before two trialists scored to make it a comfortably afternoon.
JOHNSTONES PAINT TROPHY
Posh were handed a bye in the first round of the JPT which means Posh won`t enter the competition until the second round in October.
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony wants two pieces of silverware at the end of the season so this is a competition he wants to win. Posh have never really done that well in this competition so hopefully we can change things this season.
AGREEMENT SOON ON LONDON ROAD?
Could there finally be an end in sight over the long running saga of redeveloping the London Road ground?
Noises coming out of Peterborough City Council, who own the ground, suggest things could be agreed within the next two to three weeks. As part of the new agreement, it will set out how Posh will be given the freehold of the ground which is good news for the club and fans.
Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony is also confident things will be agreed before the new season kicks off on Saturday 3rd August.
Even if both parties finally sign the new terms of the lease, it could be months before any re-development of the Moys` End starts. Whenever the re-development does happen, the new lease also includes details of the reduced rent payable by the club.
SEASON TICKETS
Season ticket sales for the forthcoming season have reached over 4,200.
You can still buy a season ticket with prices ranging from £325, for Adults in the London Road Terrace, to £1,180 for Adults in the Caroline Hand Executive Suite (this does include a 3-course meal!).
POSH TRANSFER UPDATE
There have been plenty of rumours going round regarding Posh players and players Posh are after.
A full round up can be found HERE .
The confirmed news relating solely to targets or Posh players include Posh not being interested in Lyle Taylor of Falkirk and Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn.
Players Posh have tried to get, but have failed in their pursuit include Jamie Paterson who has signed for Nottingham Forest, Alex Pritchard who has gone on a season long loan to Swindon, Luke Freeman and Bradfords hot striker Nahki Wells.
Six Posh players are currently on the transfer list. A bid has been accepted for Emile Sinclair but the player couldn`t agree personal terms. Up to a dozen clubs have expressed an interest in the player but Posh have received no further bids. Sinclair has just one year left on his contract.
Tyrone Barnett has also generated plenty of interest with Blackpool showing the most interest. Any move by the Tangerines could rely on them selling Tom Ince first.
The six players on the transfer list are: Gaby Zakuani, Tommy Rowe, Tyrone Barnett, Emile Sinclair, Danny Kearns and Nicky Ajose.
The following players have so far departed London Road:
George Boyd has signed for Premiership newboys Hull City
Jonson Clarke-Harris signed for League One rivals Oldham Athletic for an nominal fee
Mark Little has left following the end of his contract and is currently on trial at Championship Birmingham City
Dwight Gayle has made a multi-million pound move to Premiership Crystal Palace |
PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES
The Republic of Ireland tour finished with two draws in the two first team matches while the Under 18s drew their first match before rounding off the tour with a resounding 3-0 win. The results were:
Shelbourne 1 v 1 Posh (Tomlin)
UCD 2 v 2 Posh (Ajose x 2)
UCD U19`s 1 v 1 Posh U18`s
Longford U19`s 0 v 3 Posh U18`s
Posh fielded another two different sides to the ones that lined up for the first match against Shelbourne.
Posh fell behind to goals either side of half-time against UCD before Nicky Ajose scored a brace of goals to draw Posh level. The second goal, in the last minute of play, was particularly spectacular!
The home pre-season matches are:
Saturday, 13th July – QPR
Wednesday, 24th July – Watford
Monday, 29th July – Hull City
Tickets for all the home pre-season matches cost just £5 for season ticket holders if bought in advance while the price increases to £10, the same price for non-season ticket holders, if bought on the day. Under 16`s get in for just £5.
Other pre-season matches scheduled are:
Wednesday, 17th July – Mansfield Town
Saturday, 20th July – Northampton Town
Saturday, 27th July – Bedford Town (v Posh XI)
LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP
Coventry City are still dominating all non-transfer news in League One as they have agreed a deal with Northampton Town to share their Sixfields Stadium for the next three years! Sounds cobblers, but it`s true! The Football League have ratified the deal which means Posh will be travelling to Sixfields on Boxing Day instead of the Ricoh Arena. Most of Coventry`s “home” fixtures will take place on a Sunday.
Former Posh goalkeeper and Man United coach Eric Steele has taken up a temporary goalkeeping coach position at Shrewsbury. Steele left Manchester United at the end of last season when new Red Devils manager David Moyes replaced him with former England keeper Chris Woods.
Five Crewe Alexandra footballers were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault while at a pre-season training camp in Cornwall while another two men were arrested in Cheshire! The seven players were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman in her early 20s in the early hours of Saturday! They have all been bailed.
Following Posh`s recent 2-2 draw with Irish side UCD, MK Dons were the next team to pitch up for a match against the Dublin based side. Things didn`t start very well for the Dons as they fell two goals behind their hosts inside the first 20 minutes. They did strike back before half time though with a penalty from trialist Antiago Aloi before Luke Chadwick struck an equaliser. The match finished 2-2.
