Time for new Posh blood?

Peterborough United finished on the losing side again on Saturday going down 2-1 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

It was yet another disappointing performance by Posh and a performance that may have changed Fergie’s view on whether to bring anyone new in or not.

In the week leading up to the game, Fergie had stated he was happy with the squad he had and that he wouldn’t be bringing anyone new to the club. However, after this latest setback, he is set for a re-think!

Ferguson said to putv after the defeat on Saturday: ‘The players need to pull their fingers out. They need to shape up pretty quickly, starting today.

‘I keep saying I don`t want to sign any new players in January, but the current ones are forcing my hand. I have no doubts that the chairman will give me the money to spend if I ask him.

‘I believe that some of them, sub-consciously at least, have accepted that 16th in the Championship is good enough.

‘I want to get to the next level and it has started to irritate me that we have missed some opportunities to do just that this season. Well it isn`t good enough for me.

‘We keep putting ourselves in the position from where we can kick on, but we don`t quite manage it. It`s irrelevant that we have an average crowd of 8,000 or whatever.

‘We fell well short of the standards the players are capable of achieving and well short of the standards I expect, but we`ve been scrambling to results lately. We haven`t had the sort of dominance we enjoyed in games earlier in the season and we need to get back to that.’

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has openly admitted that he will always back the manager if he [Fergie] ever wants to bring someone new into the club.

Will Fergie look to bring someone in though or are his words just ‘verbal threats’ to the current players that they need to buck their ideas up?

What do you think? Do we need reinforcements or should Fergie stick with what he’s got?

We have had a number of players out injured recently who are gradually returning plus players who had been out on loan have returned to give Fergie more choice, but should we solely rely on what we’ve got?

Ajose and Ball haven’t exactly been shining lights while on loan in League One and, although it is hard to say how Ajose would cope with Championship life as we’ve only seen him for about 30 minutes, we know Ball knows where the net is, but his performances for Posh earlier in the season weren’t outstanding which is the reason he was dropped.

Ryan Tunnicliffe impressed me with his energetic cameo appearances earlier in the season, but recently he hasn’t impressed, especially with his poor passing.

Will the return of McCann and Frecklington steady the ship?

With Taylor, Sinclair, Ball, Ajose and Tomlin up front, have we got enough firepower that’s good enough for the Championship?

Should Fergie take a look at himself as it’s an easy life when you’re doing well which is what has happened since he came back, but can he improve the fortunes of Posh when we’re not in a good run of form? Has he learnt from his two Championship relegations in two consecutive years or could it be three in a row come the end of the season?

Have teams worked out what our strengths are and a way to combat them? If so, has Fergie got a Plan B?

Should we get a specialist left back in to the club? Craig Alcock was outstanding at right back but has been shifted to left back to accommodate the return of Mark Little. As most people will admit, Little is good at marauding forward but rarely gets back to do his defensive duties. Would it work to have Little on the right side of the diamond with Alcock at right back?

There are certain areas of the team that obviously need bolstering, but when everyone is fit, we do have a decent Championship squad.

The difference between a decent Championship squad and a good one is very small though and in my opinion, we only need to make small tweaks that would take us to the next level.

If we can maintain our Champiosnhip status at the end of the season, the young players we have will have learnt so much this season and with that experience, it is the makings of a good championship team.

So, should Fergie look to splash the cash now or stick to what he has got?
