Manchester United reserves featuring midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe, who is on-loan at Peterborough United, played out a 0-0 draw with Wigan on Tuesday [21st February] night.
The point was enough to see United go back to the top of the table but it was a far from convincing match.
The conditions were the main reason for the poor spectacle as the pitch cut up really badly and there was a strong swirling wind to contend with.
Tunnicliffe, who has started for Posh on 12 occasions this season while being named on the substitutes bench 18 times, played the full match and had a number of chances to score.
In a poor first half of very few chances, it was Wigan that nearly took the lead if it wasn`t for Will Keane who cleared off the United goal line.
During the second half, a textbook volley from Ryan Tunnicliffe was blocked a long way from goal while another long range effort, this time from Davide Petrucci was also well off target.
Ritchie De Laet was next up but his effort curled wide while another Petrucci effort was deflected over the top.
Sam Johnstone, in the United goal, parried out a Steven Boothman drive but Jonathan Rugg could only find the side-netting from the rebound.
Some neat play between Lingard and De Laet created an opening for Keane but an excellently timed Jamie McCormack challenge deflected the effort wide for a corner.
Tunnicliffe had one of United`s only effort on goal as his low drive finally made Wigan keeper Lee Nicholls work. Johnstone had to be on his guard to make a fine finger-tip save to deny Jesjua Angoy before Nicholls was called on again, this time to deny Will Keane in stoppage time.
It was a good run out for Tunnicliffe who will again hope to feature in the Posh match away at npower Championship bottom club Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
