Darragh MacAnthony has announced the signing of goalkeeper, Ben Alnwick, on a three year deal. The 27 year old played 19 games in 3 years at Sunderland, before managing just 1 game at Tottenham in 5 years. During his time at Spurs, he went on loan to Luton, Leicester, Carlisle, Norwich, Leeds, Doncaster and Leyton Orient.

In 2012 he signed for Barnsley, and made 10 appearances. In 2013 he joined Charlton and played just 8 games, before re-signing for Leyton Orient. However, it appeared that he had injury problems, and played just 1 game for them before having his contract cancelled in March.

His most recent club was Blackpool, where he spent time on trial. Darragh MacAnthony has suggested that Blackpool were on the verge of signing him, but MacAnthony swooped and took him away from the Seasiders.

MacAnthony had this to say on Twitter:

‘The Player comes from good background prem club wise, excellent with his feet but not known as a goal scorer..plenty experience higher up..’

‘And I have taken him right under nose of championship club he was about to sign for, depending should medical go ok of course.’

‘Its a player not with a club but was pre season & about to sign for them but one my management staff pushed me heavily to bring in.’

‘Delighted to welcome Ben Alnwick to the Posh on a 3 year deal. Excellent GK with superb distribution who we are delighted to have on board.’

So, DMAC is clearly happy with his new signing, but what does this mean for current number one, Bobby Olejnik? Could he be leaving? Or will Alnwick just provide him with a challenge to keep his place? We’ll have to wait and see!
