We’ve heard it all before about George Boyd moving on to bigger and better things and last time Posh were in the Championship, he had a short jaunt to Notts Forest on loan for the latter months of that fateful season.
With fans expecting him to move on after we were relegated from the Championship, it was a nice surprise that chairman Darragh MacAnthony persuaded him to sign a new contract keeping him at the club until 2013.
However, despite rejecting an offer from an unamed club in pre-season, Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry admits the club will not stand in the way of winger George Boyd should they receive an offer they cannot refuse.
He admits the club will stand by their word in letting the player depart should their valuation be met in the January transfer window.
Fry said: ‘George Boyd was actually our best player when we were in the Championship last time, scoring 13 goals as we were ultimately relegated.
‘He signed a new contract this time last year and the chairman promised him that we wouldn’t stand in his way if a club came in for him whether we went up or not.
‘At the minute the bids that we’ve had have fallen well short of our valuation for him. We hope they continue to do so, but he has had a good start to the season, which could trigger more interest in January.
‘If we get acceptable bids then we will unfortunately keep our word and let him talk to the club in question, but if not then we will gladly have him as part of our squad.’
We all know how Fry operates when either bringing in or selling players and it’s always in Poshs best interest. I’m certain I know what he’s up to with this latest statement.
However, there will obviously come a time when the ‘White Pele’ will depart London Road for pastures new which will be a sad day.
What we should all remember is that although he would leave a big hole behind, the squad Posh now have is possibly the best we’ve ever had and it will be up to the players left behind to fill that hole.
I’m sure players like Tomlin will mature into a very influential player and from the sounds of newcomer Danny Kearns, we could have another player who will cause the opposition no end of problems.
If we do have to wave goodbye to Boyd sooner rather than later, we have got players that can step up to the plate. Plus, I’m sure Darren Ferguson will have envisaged a time when Boyd is either unavailable for Posh or that he has moved on and is prepared for all eventualities.
