Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith became a dad last week but it was Barry Fry that made the ‘catch of the day’!

Craig Mackail-Smith with Amber Fry and Isla

There were happy scenes in the Mackail-Smith household this week. Craig’s partner Amber Fry gave birth to a baby girl. Amazingly, the baby was delivered by both Craig and Barry Fry!!

Amber and her dad, Barry, were watching the England v Scotland match when contractions started. On contacting the hospital, they were advised not to go to hospital until the contractions were a minute apart so Amber decided to go for a bath but then things changed so quickly that they didn`t have time to get to the hospital!

Craig said: “Suddenly it went from relative calm to [Amber] screaming her head off and the head started to appear.”

They were advised to get Amber out of the bath and off to hospital but that was not an option as they started to help her out of the bath.

“We could barely hear the instructions because of the noise. So we did the best we could,” said Mackail-Smith.

“We lifted her up and she pushed again and Barry was there to catch the baby as it came out – I`ve never seen him move so fast.

“When the baby came we were all in shock and could not believe what had happened.

“It was the best and worst emotions I have been through, all in one night.

“During [the labour] it was very difficult. Amber was in a lot of pain and we had no painkillers but when the baby was born it was amazing – it was the best thing I have ever been involved in.”

Barry and his wife Kristine were also praised for being there and helping Amber through the labour.

The baby, who weighed six pounds and 12 ounces, has been named Isla.

Both mother and daughter are doing well.

Congratulations to Craig and Amber on the birth of their baby girl from Vital Posh.
