Vital Posh looks at the latest news coming out of Peterborough United over the past week and also what their rival teams in League One are up to.
McCANN “SEMI-RETIRES” FROM INTERNATIONAL DUTY
Midfielder Grant McCann has called time on his international career but is not completely retiring just yet.
The 33-year-old wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate more on his club football and coaching career but admitted that if the call came from Northern Ireland in the future he would play again.
WINNING RUN CONTINUES
Posh kept up their 100% winning run as they beat visiting Oldham Athletic. A very poor Posh performance saw them take the lead through their record signing Britt Assombalonga who scored from a thunderous 25-yard strike.
Assombalonga was at the centre of attention for the second Posh goal as he was “felled” by the on-rushing goalkeeper although from our view there was little contact made! With Grant McCann already sitting back down after being replaced it was up to Lee Tomlin to dispatch the resulting penalty.
The Latics created a few decent chances but none of them troubled Bobby Olejnik in goal until added time when Gaby Zakuani failed to cut out an excellent cross which substitute striker Charlie MacDonald stooped to head past Olejnik.
POSH OLD BOYS
They may not be at Posh anymore but there were notable achievements made by George Boyd, Dwight Gayle and Craig Mackail-Smith this week.
Both Boyd and Gayle made their Premiership debuts on Sunday.
Gayle played the whole 90 minutes in the narrow 1-0 defeat to Spurs who scored via the penalty spot. Boyd came on as a late substitute for Hull in their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.
Catch Of The Day!
There were much happier scenes surrounding Mackail-Smith though and it has nothing to do with football. His partner, Amber Fry, gave birth to a baby girl. Amazingly, the baby was delivered by both Craig and Barry Fry!!
Amber went for a bath went the contractions began but as Craig describes, things went so quickly that they didn`t have time to get to the hospital: “Suddenly it went from relative calm to [Amber] screaming her head off and the head started to appear.”
They were advised to get Amber out of the bath and off to hospital but that was not an option as they started to help her out of the bath.
“We could barely hear the instructions because of the noise. So we did the best we could,” said Mackail-Smith.
“We lifted her up and she pushed again and Barry was there to catch the baby as it came out – I`ve never seen him move so fast.
“When the baby came we were all in shock and could not believe what had happened.
“It was the best and worst emotions I have been through, all in one night.
“During [the labour] it was very difficult. Amber was in a lot of pain and we had no painkillers but when the baby was born it was amazing – it was the best thing I have ever been involved in.”
Barry and his wife Kristine were also praised for being there and helping Amber through the labour.
The baby, who weighed six pounds and 12 ounces, has been named Isla.
Both mother and daughter are doing well.
Congratulations to Craig and Amber on the birth of their baby girl.

After finishing in second place in the previous two Man of the Match awards, midfielder Danny Kearns has finally and deservedly won the award for the Notts County match which Posh won 4-2.

POSH TRANSFER UPDATE
Transfer listed striker Nicky Ajose has returned from a brief trial at Scottish Premiership side St.Johnstone. Darren Ferguson has denied that Ajose is part of a deal being negotiated with the Perth Saints for their striker Stevie May; who incidentally was on the score sheet yet again at the weekend.
There have been no further movements for any of the other transfer listed players or want-away Lee Tomlin.
The five Posh players on the transfer list are: Gaby Zakuani, Tommy Rowe, Tyrone Barnett, Emile Sinclair, and Nicky Ajose.
The following players have so far departed London Road:
George Boyd has signed for Premiership newboys Hull City
Jonson Clarke-Harris signed for League One rivals Oldham Athletic for an nominal fee
Dwight Gayle has made a multi-million pound move to Premiership Crystal Palace |
AWAY TICKET NEWS
Tickets have gone on sale for the Sky Bet League One trip to Crewe Alexandra.
The match kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, 7th September, 2013. Forever Posh have arranged coach travel to the match with coaches leaving London Road at 10:15am.
LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP
Coventry City are certainly firing on all cylinders. After an incredible 5-4 win last week, they hit a further 4 goals this week at Carlisle United. That win leaves them on minus four points?just four points behind Carlisle and Stevenage! The win isn`t the only thing the Sky Blues are celebrating. This week they celebrate 130 years since being formed?can they make it 131?
Former Posh boss Mark Cooper has been confirmed as the new manager of Swindon Town. Cooper took over from Kevin MacDonald who left the club in July. Swindon have so far won one match and lost two League matches this season under Cooper. Their only win came courtesy of a 1-0 win over Stevenage thanks to a Massimo Luongo goal.
Leyton Orient remain at the top of the tree after winning their third League game on the trot. They earned a hard fought 1-0 win at Stevenage thanks to a 29th minute Kevin Lisbie goal. The O`s have a goal difference of +8 after scoring 9 goals in their three games while only conceding one goal so far.
Posh are the only other team keeping pace with the O`s. They had an undeserved 2-1 victory over Oldham Athletic thanks to another goal from their record signing Britt Assombalonga and a penalty from the want-away star Lee Tomlin.
There are still another seven teams unbeaten in League One after three games. Three of those teams have won 2 and drawn one while three have won one and drawn two. The other unbeaten team is Preston North End but they have drawn all three matches so far.
Former Premiership side Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of those sides with two wins and a draw and have moved into third place on goal difference.
