Posh started their 2009/2010 campaign by going down by two goals to one at Pride Park against Derby County.
A goal early on and a goal late on, with a George Boyd penalty sandwiched in between, were enough to see our hosts take all three points.
For the fixture Darren Ferguson preferred to play Charlie Lee at right back instead of Russell Martin and the only new signing to start was Tommy Rowe with Pearce, Frecklington and Diagouraga having to be content with places on the bench.
In front of a crowd of 33,010 Posh got off to the worst possible start conceding the first goal in the Championship this season. With four minutes on the clock Derby won a corner and when it was only cleared as far as Teale, the ball was played back in and Miles Addison headed home from six yards out.
After the set back Posh struggled to get any immediate response going as Robbie Savage, sat in front of the back four, pulled the strings to keep Derby on top.
Posh did manage to get the ball into the net but a move involving Mclean, Rowe and Boyd that saw the Scotland ‘B` international score, was deemed to be offside.
Another chance carved out by the overlapping Williams saw Mclean hit the side netting with his shot.
Trailing by the one-goal Posh started the second half looking to get back onto level terms but without much success.
However, as the half progressed, Posh did create chances. In the space of about six minutes Mackail-Smith, bearing down on goal, was expertly tackled, Aaron Mclean hit a shot just the wrong side of the post and Lee Frecklington forced a good save out of Bywater.
Just as you thought we`d not score Frecklington, in a moment of madness, hauled down Batt. Boyd, with eighty-four minutes on the clock, sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Sadly, Posh were unable to tie up a share of the spoils succumbing to a late eighty-seventh minute goal. Commons floated a dangerous looking corner on and Lewis punched the ball against his own bar and could only look on as Teale poked the ball over the line from a yard out.
Derby could have stretched their lead late on but Lewis foiled Commons in a one-on-one situation.
Not the ideal start and the competition clearly looks to be a different calibre in this league but Posh showed enough not to be over-awed.
