Vital Posh looks at previous matches between Ipswich Town and Peterborough United.

Peterborough United travel to Ipswich Town for only their second ever League meeting at Portman Road! In fact, there have only ever been three League meetings between these two sides with five other matches in League and FA Cups.

Posh definitely have the upper hand having won two of the three League meetings while drawing the other. Out of all 8 competitive matches, Ipswich have only won once?1-0 at London Road in an FA Cup match during the 1971/72 season.

I think everyone will remember the last meeting between these two sides?an entertaining match earlier this season at London Road when the Sky TV cameras came to town to witness an astonishing 7-1 win for Posh despite going behind!

Last Time Out at Portman Road

The first ever League meeting between Ipswich and Posh ended in a disappointing goalless draw.

Both sides were languishing in the bottom three with Posh bottom with 13 points from 19 games while Ipswich were two places above Posh on 17 points.

On a mild December Tuesday evening, the draw made it three matches without defeat for Mark Coopers men and their second clean sheet of the season. It was a really defensive performance put in by Posh and an outstanding performance by Joe Lewis that earnt the point.

The Tractor Boys dominated the early encounter without registering a shot on target. Grant Leadbitter and Jonathon Walters both had efforts off target before Lewis made his first outstanding save after the half hour mark when saving a twice deflected effort from Jon Stead.

Craig Mackail-Smith was set up by Aaron McLean moments later but he scuffed his shot with the ball tamely going wide of the target.

An enormous long throw from Exodus Geohaghon caused problems for the Ipswich backline as they allowed the ball to bounce into the area which was met by the head of Chris Whelpdale. Unfortunately his effort went straight at keeper Lee Barrett.

Whelpdale was involved in another good move by Posh as his cross found the head of Lee Frecklington who`s downward header was stopped by the legs of Barrett.

Liam Rosenior curled an effort wide of Lewis` goal before debutant Stern John found the back of the net with a header but the whistle had already blown for a foul against him as he held down left back Scott Griffiths.

Just before the half time whistle, the only yellow card of the match was awarded against George Boyd who tugged back Edwards.

Half-time: Ipswich Town 0 – 0 Peterborough United

Stern John had another glorious opportunity to open his scoring account on his debut just after the break but his header from a Rosenior cross went agonisingly wide.

Stead then saw a half volley safely gathered by Lewis on 51 minutes. An injury to Paul Coutts on 62 minutes saw him lay flat out in the centre circle but Ipswich played on and created another chance for Garvan but his effort was blocked by Griffiths.

Further chances for Leadbitter and McAuley, with Lewis producing what was arguably a world-class save from the latter, fell Ipswichs way as they made a lot of the running during the first 30 minutes of the second half. Substitute Conor Wickham next tried his luck with a low effort but once again Lewis was up to the task.

The final 15 minutes of the match belonged to Posh though as they finally found their passing boots. Frecklington had a shot go over the bar while Shaun Batt was causing all sorts of problems for the Town back four.

Posh nearly snatched all three points late into the game when a McLean shot was cleared off the line by McAuley.

Final Score: Ipswich Town 0 – 0 Peterborough United
