Aaron McLean returned to play at London Road for the first time since being sold to Hull City last January. He received a warm welcome from everybody from the moment he stepped off the coach to the moment he left after the game. This was despite McLean scoring the only goal of a tightly fought game. In fact the goal he scored was the only opportunity he had during the game after being completely snuffed out by the central pairing of Gabriel Zakuani and Ryan Bennett.
I have to say though that I was disappointed with Hull and their tactics. The majority of their attacking play started with hoofing the ball up field. Once they`d scored, they then parked the bus and defended their slender one goal lead!
Fair play to Posh, they kept playing their football on the ground and if it were not for an in-form keeper in Adriano Basso, Posh would`ve won this game as he made stunning saves in both halves.
A mention should also be made to the Posh keeper, Paul Jones, who is coming under pressure from an injury-free Joe Lewis as he made three quick saves in succession in the first half. First was from a spectacular long range effort from debutant Martyn Waghorn. This was followed up by Tom Craineys shot which he got a foot to but the ball fell to Paul McKenna who struck a vicious shot from 20 yards. Jones managed to punch McKenna`s shot clear before Rosenior`s tame shot was held by Jones.
Surprisingly for a match involving Posh, there weren`t that many clear cut chances for either team. The majority of efforts by Posh came from long range with only a couple of close range efforts that went begging, including a glorious chance for Tommy Rowe in the second half who, in the 6 yard box, side footed his effort into the side netting. If Posh are going to achieve their goal of Championship survival, they need to start converting these efforts.
Credit where credit is due though. Hull have only lost twice away from home in the past 12 months so it was always going to be a tough game for Posh and seeing as they matched Hull in everything bar the scoring statistics, people should be able to see that Posh are a far different proposition to the last time we were in the Championship.
I was disappointed after the game as I felt we were robbed of a point, but on reflection, yes it was disappointing, but if Posh can keep up the performances they`ve showed this season, keep creating the chances then we should survive in the Championship. I wouldn`t go as far as Aaron McLean did after the match when he said that Posh could challenge for the Play-Offs!!
