Following relegation from the Championship last season, Peterborough United defender Gaby Zakuani had long thoughts and discussions with his family before reluctantly deciding to hand in a transfer request.

His decision was based on his desire to stay in the thoughts of his international manager and play for his beloved DR Congo team. Zakuani played in this years Africa Cup of Nations and he believes by dropping down to League One, it could affect his chances of playing International football.

The 26-year-old who has put everything on the line while playing for Posh and has even played with broken bones has received mixed emotions over his decision. There have been a few mindless idiots who have decided to abuse Zakuani via his Twitter account but the majority of Posh fans, although disappointed with his decision, wish him well where-ever he moves to.

“Big thank you to everyone, I’ve actually got nothing negative to say, the clubs been great to me and I’ve given everything.

“I don’t think I’m bigger or better than anyone, I’ve been a loyal servant and will always have an attachment to the club.” tweeted Zakuani.

“I’m still a Peterborough player at the minute and will be till anything happens, if I’m still here in August I’ll still give 100% as always.

“I won’t respond to the abuse and negative tweets, I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. I’ve done a lot & more, thank you for everything.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson feels Zakuani is making a mistake though by requesting a transfer: “It`s a decision Gaby is entitled to make and I have to respect his wishes but I was surprised and I am a little disappointed.

“As far as I am concerned it will be a short-term stay in League One and Gaby has gone back to the Championship with us before.

“I wanted him here because he finished last season well and his partnership with Michael Boswtick looked very strong. I told him that, but he wants to go and I accept that his international place is a big part of his decision.

“I can`t dwelll on it now though. I have excellent cover at centre-back anyway in Bostwick, who was outstanding there last season, Nat Knight-Percival and Shaun Brisley.

“I also have Craig Alcock who can play there so we will easily cope without Gaby.”

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony isn`t dwelling over the transfer request by Posh`s longest current serving player as he tweeted: “That`s life. Wonderful servant to the club but if someone asks to leave, then you need to plan for life without them.”
