Peterborough United have offered new contracts to a number of first team regulars.

Posh defensive trio Craig Alcock, Gaby Zakuani and Tommy Rowe have all been offered extensions to their current contracts which have just a year left to run.

Alcock and Zakuani are expected to sign them but current Posh captain, Rowe, has declined the offer!

Rowe spent part of this last season out injured but his return from injury coincided with the excellent form Posh showed in the second half of the season. Coincidence?? Rowe is a crucial part of the team and has grown into a very good Championship-standard player.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson doesn`t have any problems with Rowe not signing the deal as he said: “Tommy Rowe only has a year left, so he is slightly different to some of the other players in the squad.

“Tommy and I have had a good chat and there won’t ever be a problem between the club and Tommy so we will have to wait and see on that one.” Ferguson continued.

“Tommy Rowe doesn`t want to commit to the club beyond the length of his current contract and I have no problem with that. There is no drama, no issue with him as he`s a top player and a top lad.

“We have to protect ourselves though so he will probably move on.”

Mark Little and Grant McCann

Grant McCann and Mark Little were both on the transfer list last season. Although McCann was offered a deal until the end of the season following some inspired displays they have now both been offered new contracts.

McCann was obviously delighted to receive the offer as he tweeted: “hopefully get it sorted soon I can enjoy my Break, and come back ready to win the League.”

Fergie has given both players time to consider the offer: “They will be given a certain time to think about those offers and make a decision.”

Danny Swanson

Other players with one year remaining on their contract include defender Nat Knight-Percival and midfielder Danny Swanson.

Posh have an option set up in his contract that allows them to extend the contract of Knight-Percival beyond 2014 but things are less clear regarding Swanson.

Swanson was a bit “hit and miss” during the season but he was never given a run of games to settle into the team and show everyone what he has to offer. He was close to moving back to Scotland on loan during January but things fell through at the last minute. With a good pre-season under his belt, Swanson could be an excellent player for Posh in League One.

Further discussions are going to take place with Swanson before deciding on his future although finances at Posh could dictate matters as Fergie confirmed: “There are certain players who will have to go because we have to balance the books, I imagine there will be interest in some players and if bids do come in we will talk about it then.”
