Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson believes patience will be the key to success this season.
After last season where expectations were very high, Darren Ferguson is trying to play down the high expectations of some supporters by saying that we all need to be very patient this season.
Having lost Britt Assombalonga and having a very young squad, many fans are actually seeing this season as one of a transitional one but Fergie still wants to see success at the club as he confirmed to local media: “Patience may be a word we use a lot this season. Everyone knows what we are about this season in terms of improving the training ground and developing young players, but, while it would benefit us all if everyone stayed patient, we also want to be successful.
“We had a good start in League One at least by winning a tough game at Rochdale and now we open our home programme with two more tough games against very good sides which I would imagine would also be very tight. I can see a lot of 1-0 results in this division this season.
“It`s just about picking points up at this stage of the season. The results won`t necessarily tell us where we are all at in terms of promotion at the end of the season.”
After losing Britt so close to the start of the season and having been unable to replace him so far, it may not be the best time to face an unbeaten MK side who are scoring for fun and the pre-season League One favourites Sheffield United but Fergie is happy to be playing both sides so soon into the season: “I`m pleased to be starting at home against MK. The game will have an edge to it which I like. We have history with this club and the games are always very competitive and this one will be no different.
“They`ve done good business in the transfer market this summer by signing three quality strikers. It looks like they`ve added some intensity to their team which can only help them so I`m expecting a cracking game and a great atmosphere.
“Me and their manager [Karl Robinson] have been at our clubs for a while now and we have a healthy respect for each other. Perhaps we are a sign that clubs want stability these days.
“We got the better of them last season and we`ll have a good go at them tomorrow. I enjoy the rivalry with them and so do the players.
“Jon Taylor should be back which is good news as he brings pace and energy to the team as well as the quality he showed when setting up the goal at Rochdale.”
What would`ve been a tough game got even tougher after Posh lost both central defenders last weekend to hamstring and knee ligament injuries. Ricardo Santos and Michael Bostwick got the nod for the Capital One Cup defeat at Portsmouth in midweek but neither of them did any favours as they both struggled.
After that match, Fergie was hoping to bring in one or two players to bolster the defence and forward options but this hasn`t happened and it doesn`t look as if anyone will come in before the match with MK.
“I`m more doubtful than hopeful that we will have any new players at the club before the weekend. That`s not to say that there won`t be further changes though,” said Fergie.
“We will deal with the injuries at the back. Ricardo Santos found it difficult at times at Portsmouth, but we have Shaun Brisley available and he has proved in the past that he is a strong League One player.”
One of the criticisms made by Posh fans was the lack of creativity in midfield. Jack Payne and Jermaine Anderson [pictured above] have started the first two matches but both are more defensively minded although Anderson does have potential to become a very good box-to-box midfielder.
“We are working on Jermaine Anderson getting further forward from midfield. He`s a young lad who understands his role really well, but we also have good cover for the midfield places in Kane Ferdinand and Grant McCann.
“I won`t have to leave Jermaine out for physical reasons like I did last season though. If he`s fit and in form, he will play. The same applies to Kgosi [Nthle].”
