It was never going to be a glamorous tie but there was a sense of disappointment amongst Peterborough United fans following the draw for the second round of the FA Cup.

Players celebrating promotion at Colchester

Posh were drawn once again against Colchester United in a Cup competition. This time it`s in the second round of the FA Cup after Posh somehow overcame Carlisle United in the first round while the U`s beat Gosport Borough 6-3.

The two sides have faced each other 6 times in the FA Cup with the U`s winning none of those ties! Posh have won four ties with the other two ending in draws. The last time they met in the FA Cup was in 2007/08 when the sides met in the third round at Layer Road. Referee Andre Mariner saw Posh win 3-1 thanks to goals from Aaron McLean (4), George Boyd (46) and Charlie Lee (73). The match was all-square at half-time though after Teddy Sherringham equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot after 43 minutes.

Darren Ferguson was happy with the draw and sees it as an opportunity to progress in the competition as he said: “We have had some good games against Colchester in recent years and obviously the stadium holds special memories after the win to secure promotion a few years ago. We enjoyed a big win there in the Capital One Cup last season and hopefully our record in cup competitions against them will continue.”

Posh have got to the third round of the competition for the last eight years! Can they make it nine years on the trot? The only time Posh progressed further was when they beat Colchester!

Although Fergie is looking to go as far as possible in the competition, it will be a tricky tie against a fellow League One side as he continued: “They are a decent side and have improved since the change of manager. They have a lot of exciting players in their squad and it will be a challenging tie, but we are desperate to do well in this competition.

“I am sure the fans will be reasonably happy because it is not too far to travel and we always seem to take good numbers there. We will look forward to the game when it comes around but we have some big league games coming up before then.”

Posh face a trip to mid-table Walsall on Saturday before hosting play-off side Swindon Town and possible League One champions Bristol City before they travel to Colchester for the tie.
