As we move into the middle half of November, its time for a little reflection.
After being promoted last season we`ve probably surprised a few people with our continued good progress. We`re currently on a good unbeaten run and we`ve also secured a place in the second round of the FA Cup.
I guess if I were being honest I`d have to admit that, so far Posh have exceeded my expectations. In fact, a casual remark made by a fellow supporter has gotten me thinking.
The first round of the FA Cup produced some shock results with league teams capitulating to non-league teams, in fact we could have found ourselves embarrassed on another day if ‘Lady Luck` hadn`t of combined with good fortune to see us scrape past a gallant AFC Hornchurch.
So, returning to the casual remark, it was suggested to me that the gap between the leagues and the non-league clubs is narrowing all the time, that the standard of player found in Leagues One and Two are not that much higher than that found at the top non-league sides.
It`s definitely a thought to ponder over!
Perhaps positive feedback for that remark is shown by our own rise, we`ve basically got the same team as last year and our rivals from last year, MK Dons, are also benefitting from a remarkably good start.
However, on the negative side, if it were true then you`d expect newly promoted non-league sides to surge up the League Two table but, in recent years, that hasn`t been the case unlike when promotion into the old fourth division, from non-league football, was first instigated.
So, is the divide closing? We`d suggest not. We`d suggest that non-league players, as expected, are raising their game when facing league opposition.
However, whilst our climb up the League One table may suggest that the two lower divisions are not separated by much talent wise, I feel there is a big step up in class to the Championship, in fact I`d describe it as another world. The Championship is littered with clubs that have fallen from Premier League grace and League One teams that venture into it find life tough.
So, whilst our start to the season is incredibly welcomed, perhaps we should focus on just how tough the next step will be if we`re in the shake up for promotion come next May.
