“That was the most dominant we have been in any game this season and yet we`ve lost. We played some terrific football, enjoyed 70 per cent possession and had Doncaster just where we wanted them.

“Our energies and our pace were too much for them to handle. We scored early on, but we needed to score that second goal before half-time to kill them off.

“Anyone seeing the goals will think that Ryan`s slip has cost us the match,” Ferguson moaned. “But that`s absolute nonsense.

“Forwards get away with murder at times. Defenders and goalkeepers make mistakes that cost goals, but we had so many chances to score on Saturday it was frightening.

Darren Ferguson (Peterborough United) makes his feelings known to match referee

“Doncaster were bottom of the league for a reason. If they had gone 2-0 down away from home the confidence would have sapped from them.

“But we just weren`t ruthless enough. George Boyd has missed the target from four yards, Emile has gone clean through and even after we fell behind we had enough opportunities to come back and win.

“It`s very disappointing as we had a great chance to consolidate our position in the table and instead we`ve slipped down a few places.

“They might also have had two players sent off. I watched the Liverpool game before our match and saw a lad get sent off for winning the ball, yet the tackle on Grant McCann in our game was far worse and he just got a yellow card.

“Their left-back has then been cautioned and immediately commits another foul which I believe he would have been booked for if he hadn`t already had a yellow.

“We have a long wait now to get it out of our system.”

Match referee Darren Drysdale angered Posh by failing to award a penalty late on in the game when George Boyd was upended.
“I`ve seen the DVD and it`s a penalty, but I get into trouble if I say too much about the officials. It`s like being at school.” commented Ferguson.

“But I don`t see why George has gone down unless he was tripped. The lad has caught him, but an assistant referee who could see well enough to disallow a goal can`t see something that`s five yards in front of him.

“That`s the way it goes sometimes.”

“It`s a long season though and these decisions should even themselves out over a period of time.”

“We`ll come back stronger” – Gaby Zakuani

Gaby Zakuani believes Posh will come back stronger after Saturdays defeat to Doncaster and after picking up 13 points from the first 10 games, Zakuani is satisfactory with the progress Posh have made this season.

“We`d have settled for that many points at this stage of the season when we kicked off,” Zakuani insisted.

“And from what we`ve seen so far there is no reason for us to worry about going down. We can certainly hold our own and perhaps do even better than that.

“Obviously this is a disappointing result especially as we were the better team from start to finish.

“We created all the chances, but we didn`t manage to kill them off and that has cost us.

“The game should have been over by half-time, but they`ve then caught us with a good goal and one that came from a mistake by a player who has been outstanding in recent weeks. We`ll come back stronger though. That`s what we do here.”

Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster boss Dean Saunders admitted his side didn`t deserve their 2-1 win at Posh and were lucky to leave London Road with all three points on Saturday.

“They are a very good attacking side,” Saunders admitted. “Their movement and pace was too much for us from the start and I had to change my system after 15 minutes just to help us stay in the game.

“I was happy to reach half-time at 1-0 and then we decided to defend deeper, to deny George Boyd the space he loves to play in and to try and catch them on the break.

“Luckily it worked for us, but I can`t say the better team won. Peterborough are an excellent side and many Championship teams will struggle to contain them.

“They kept getting behind us, but we managed to keep them out to make it a great week for us.

“It`s obvious though that I still have plenty to work on.

“It`s fair to say we won`t see many matches like this one this season. There were so many chances at both ends as we did manage to create some scoring opportunities of our own.”
