Vital Posh looks at the form of both Sunderland and Peterborough United ahead of Tuesday`s Capital One Third Round Cup match.

Sunderland v Posh - Capital One Cup

Both teams come into this game with a completely different set of results.

The Black Cats have had a poor start to their season and sit bottom of the Premiership while Posh sit in second place of League One.

Sunderland

The Black Cats sit bottom of the Premiership with one point from five matches and last night sacked manager Paulo Di Canio after spending just six months in the job!

Sunderland`s sole point came away at Southampton in their second match of the season. Giaccherini gave the Black Cats a third minute lead but they couldn`t hold on to the win as the Saints equalized with just two minutes of the match remaining.

In the last round of the Capital One Cup, Sunderland nearly went out to League One side MK Dons who were leading 2-0 with just 12 minutes remaining. A late fightback saw the hosts score four unanswered goals with Connor Wickham firing two of the goals.

Peterborough United

Posh have started the season off very well winning eight out of their ten competitive matches. They have scored an amazing 30 goals in those fixtures while conceding just 9 goals.

Eleven of those goals have come in the previous two Capital One Cup matches. The first round match saw Posh travel to Colchester United and come away win a 5-1 victory but it you thought that was a good result, their second round result was even better. Playing Championship side Reading, a team who were playing in the Premiership the season before, turned up with eight internationals in their starting line-up but were thumped 6-0!!

Their latest match was a turbulent affair with a one-sided referee who booked four Posh players and sent off two others! The fact the opposition in this tie, which is starting to be classed as a local derby, committed more fouls than Posh but not one player was shown a yellow card tells its own story. Despite going down to 10 men in just the seventh minute, Posh struck twice in the first half against MK Dons thanks to a penalty from Lee Tomlin and 20-year-old Britt Assombalonga`s 8th goal of the season. A second red card was shown in the second half and it was only then that the Dons managed to breach a well organised defensive unit but they couldn`t draw themselves level as Posh deservedly claimed all three points.

Britt Assombalonga and Lee Tomlin v MK Dons

Assombalonga is leading the scoring chart at Posh but he is closely followed by Lee Tomlin (7) and Tyrone Barnett (5).
