McCANN CALLS TIME ON PLAYING CAREER

Posh assistant manager Grant McCann has confirmed he is hanging up his playing boots to concentrate on his new coaching role.

It brings to the end a career spanning 18-years, 8 different teams, more than 500 first team matches and scoring over 100 goals.

Reflecting on his time as a player, McCann is proud of what he has achieved in the game: ‘I have had so many highs during my playing career and I look back with great pride. I left Northern Ireland at the age of 16 to fulfil my dream of making it as a professional footballer and to play in the Premier League and every professional league in England has been something that I have really enjoyed.’

POSH RUMOUR MILL

Despite Barry Fry claiming we`ll know who the “20-goal a season” striker will be by the end of this week, it has been deathly silent at Posh!!

As usual there has been a mixture of rumours this week that are so way off you just know they`ve been made up while there have been some that have the potential to be true!

One of the rumours relates to the goalkeeping position. Apparently, two clubs are after Ben Alnwick, one of which is rumoured to be Leeds United, while former Posh keeper Joe Lewis is a rumoured target by Posh!

Captain Jack Payne is keen on a move back south and his former club Gillingham have already spoken to Barry Fry about the midfielder. With Posh looking for a fee for their captain, the Gills may decide to look elsewhere.

Joe Newell is still interesting Championship clubs plus one League Two club! Rotherham United are rumoured to have resurrected their interest in the midfielder.

Christian Burgess is still interesting League One and Two sides with Posh rejecting some bids for the central defender.

Shaun Brisley is also a man in demand. Unlike Payne, Brisley would prefer to move north but five of the seven clubs reportedly interested in the central defender are from the south!!

Kane Ferdinand has also attracted interest from clubs but the players agent is apparently holding things up!

It all looks promising for the transferred players at the moment, with the exception of one player who has yet to generate any interest. Kyle Vassell, who scored five goals for Posh last season (four of which came in August!), is the player who has yet to receive any interest!

Now all the Premiership sides have announced their retained lists, will Posh start to look at who`s been released, especially from the various youth set-ups? Someone like John Lundstram who has been released by Everton could do a decent job for Posh. He`s a 21-year-old midfielder who has represented England internationally at under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-20 levels and played in the play-off final for Leyton Orient when they lost on penalties to Rotherham United.

LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP

Blackpool remain in the news this week. They`ve finally announced Neil McDonald as the new manager of the club who takes over from Lee Clark who left the club following their relegation from the Championship.

Owner Karl Oyston was charged with misconduct by the FA in March after allegedly referring to Tangerines fan Stephen Smith as a ‘retard’ when the fan criticised him. Oyston admitted five charges of breaking FA Rule E3 last Thursday and this week received his punishment. has been banned from all football activity for six weeks and fined £40,000. The punishment from the Football Association has been suspended for four weeks and will not start until 8th July meaning it will last until 18th August – 10 days after the start of the League One season!

The transfer merry-go-round is in full swing now. To see who has been released by each League One side and who they have signed CLICK HERE

One name that could soon be added to the above list is that of former Posh defender Craig Morgan. He looks set to join Wigan Athletic who were relegated from the Championship last season.

OTHER NEWS OF INTEREST

Gavin Strachan is back in business. He has been appointed as head coach of Ilkeston FC but it didn`t take him long to come back to the ABAX to make his third signing for the Northern Premier League Premier Division side. 18-year-old defender Liam Marshall who played for the Posh Youth Team and who made the first team squad but didn`t make the breakthrough has followed in Strachan`s footsteps to the Derbyshire club.

Former Posh midfielder Josh Simpson has turned down the offer of a new contract at relegated Crawley Town. He has made 165 appearances for the Reds since moving from Posh in 2010 scoring 14 goals.

Sheffield Wednesday have sacked head coach Stuart Gray after 18 months in charge. The Owls finished 13th in the Championship last season, 18 points off the play-offs and 19 clear of the relegation zone.

Former Posh goalkeeper Charlie Horton who failed to make the grade at London Road but went on to sign for Cardiff City has now joined Leeds United on a two-year contract!
