Toe Injury Concerns Posh

Peterborough United centre back Gaby Zakuani left the field just before half time in the 3-1 defeat at Cardiff City on Tuesday night suffering from a recurrence of the toe injury that affected him for 3 months at the start of the season.

‘He’s struggling,’ Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson said to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. ‘For Gabby to come off in any game means he’s struggling because he normally plays through anything.

‘He had a problem with it in training so we knew he’d need an injection,’ continued Ferguson. ‘But knowing Gabby we felt he’d get through it, he’s had that many. He was just in too much pain.

‘We’ll have to see how he is in the morning but he’s in a lot of pain.’

If Zakuani fails to make this weekends crucial match against Bristol City, it could mean an earlier than scheduled debut for Shaun Brisley who signed on loan from Macclesfield Town on Wednesday [15th February].

‘He’ll be with us on Thursday,’ said Ferguson. ‘But it’s a big ask for a young boy like him to come straight into the Championship.

‘I’ve said many times that perhaps we’re looking for another centre-half with more experience when Benno goes.

‘If Gabby’s injured for a long time now it does give me a problem.’

Ferguson could just have Brisley as the only fit senior centre-back once Ryan Bennett completes his move to Norwich at the end of the month, should Zakuani be on the sidelines for any length of time.

Surely it`s time Posh act and bring some much needed experience to the near threadbare squad?
