Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson said Posh were “way off the mark from start to finish” during their 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic.

Fergie None Too Pleased With Performance

“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit the opposition were better than you and Oldham were today,” said Darren Ferguson after the match.

“We were way off the mark from start to finish. I knew Oldham had great energies and I knew they would press us all over the field. Nothing they did should have come as a surprise, but they gave us all sorts of trouble, while we couldn`t get our own passing game going.

“Oldham probably came here expecting a hard game, but the way we played gave them every encouragement and they responded very positively.

“I don`t believe we were complacent. We just struggled to get going. We have also acquired a habit of conceding needless free kicks in dangerous positions which will bite us if we keep doing it.

“I thought our front two were very good, but the rest were nowhere near the standards they are capable of. Often in a game you will have to carry one or two players, but carrying eight is difficult.

“Having said that, to win four games in a row without playing anywhere near our best is very impressive. I`m delighted with the start we`ve made and it`s comforting to know there is much more to come.”

When asked about Lee Tomlin who just didn`t look interested in the game apart from a couple of late attacking moments, Fergie said: “Lee did fine. Fans understand situations and they know it would do no one any good to give Lee a hard time.”

Britt Assombalonga wins penalty v Oldham

Fergie was much more upbeat about his record signing but admitted he has some decisions to make during the week regarding next week`s team selection: “Britt Assombalonga [pictured above] is clearly a very good player and he`s scored a great goal to get us front, but for the first time this season I have some decisions regarding selection to make.

“Picking the team has been easy up to now, but now it`s up to the players who have not yet made the side to make me pick them for the Tranmere game next Saturday [August 24].”

Posh Tweets and Comments

Britt Assombalonga – ‏@BrittOfficials

“I`m very happy with the start I`ve made at a new club, but it`s not just about me. I have to thank my team-mates for the help they`ve given me.

“The defence, the midfield and us strikers are all pulling in the same direction and we`re all after the same thing. It`s a team game and it just happens to be me scoring the goals at the moment.

“I knew I`d scored today from the moment the ball left my foot. As soon as I turned with the ball I saw I had a lot of space so just hit the ball and it was always going in.

“I`m still getting used to League One and I just hope I will carry on scoring goals. I`ll certainly do my best.”

Darragh MacAnthony – @DMAC102

“Thankful for 3 points but we were under par today but wins like that are important. Oldham played well to be fair. On we go. Britt superb!

Some poor theatrics on pitch and sidelines to try get couple of our players sent off. No need for that nonsense in football!”

Gabriel Zakuani – ‏@Gabs50Zakuani

“Nowhere near our standards but it’s another 3 points & that’s 4 wins out of 4. Winning mentality. Not always pretty but a win is a win”

Grant mccann ‏- @grantmccann11

“Bad game today but another win and that’s all that matters, played well to many time last year and lost so nice to play bad and win.”

“When we change to a flat four in midfield we play well. McCann is still too slow in midfield in the way we are trying to play. Rowe is still hopeless in midfield. Put him back in defence where he is excellent.

Two home games and the difference has been Britt. This kid is a real find. I do think he is better than Gayle. Great save by Bobby in the first half. Poor performance, but hey lads, thats three from three and second in the table. If we can win playing badly then happy days. Fergie was very honest in his assessment afterwards saying that 8 of his players were off the pace. At least it keeps feet on the ground.”

“Well that is not what you can call a classic game of football. We seemed off the pace from the first whistle to the last. But that’s always a sign of a good team that they can grind out a result despite not playing well.

Do agree that Swanson needs to be given a chance. Maybe playing Britt up top with Swanson and Tomlin playing in behind him in supporting roles. That way both Kearns and Rowe can play wider and nullify the space we leave on the flanks. And have Payne/McCann playing the central holding midfield role.”

“Hard work today and below our best. Couple of class moments from Britt and the subs made a difference. Tomlin is wasted out wide and needs to be more free.

The refs decisions were poor, even our penalty, and Alcock substituted before he was sent off. He wasn’t being dirty just the ref was looking for him as their winger dived around like Tom Daley.”

“I think Barnett worked really hard yesterday and was a nuisance for their defenders. It is clear to see that Britt likes playing with him ATM.

Britt’s goal was excellent and him and Barnett ran till the final whistle.

Bostwick was solid as a rock at the back.

Their formation was excellent – their wingers pinned back Nthle and Alcock to stop them getting forward and they swamped the midfield so McCann, Rowe and Kearns got no time on the ball. Payne added some much needed bite to the midfield when he came on”

“We deserved a bit of luck and the referee wasn’t going to help us. It was great to see us grinding out a good result and coming away with the points.

I thought there were some decent individual performances. Rowe was like a demon possessed. He was everywhere and was unlucky not to score.

How come Bobby didn’t realize the wind was blowing across the pitch and make an adjustment for it? I thought his 8 or so errors in one half at Leeds last season would always be his record but he came fairly close today!

Tyrone is gaining confidence and had some neat touches today. I love Bostwick, he, imo, was an absolute rock. Alcock was unlucky that the referee didn’t like gingas.

A win is a win = 3 points. When we look back at results, later in the season, todays’ performance will be forgotten.”

“That was not football as I know it. Appalling,’orrible game. I did not enjoy one minute of it apart from Assom’s goal. Oldham fans outsung us easily, and their team totally outplayed us for 85 minutes. Just as well they did not have a goalscorer.

Our ball control was akin to a 5 year olds first game.

One mystery? I was having difficulty in understanding that Tomlin was NOT a substitute yesterday as I did not see/notice him for 75 minutes. Then he apparently woke from his slumbers and sulking and that was not totally due to the system we played.

The football played yesterday will have a bigger affect on the gates than anything else.

Assombalonga my Man of the Match, their No.11 Montano was best man on the pitch. Rowe and Kgosi Nthle very poor games.”
