The rumour mill is doing overtime with news that Peterborough United`s star striker Dwight Gayle could be on his way to Crystal Palace!
22-year-old Gayle has a £10 million price tag on his head but this hasn`t put off a host of clubs expressing their interest in him.
‘There has never been the interest in one single Peterborough player as there has in Dwight Gayle,’ said Posh Director of Football, Barry Fry.
‘Everybody at this club loves him. Unless we get a ridiculous amount of money, I think he’ll stay.’
Gayle joined Posh on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge in November, before signing permanently in January. He went on to play 29 times for Posh last season scoring 13 goals.
Many Posh fans were confident Posh would have a very good season in the forthcoming League One season with Gayle playing up front but “exclusive” news by Talksport and South London Today are reporting that Crystal Palace have agreed a fee with Posh for the striker. Sky Sports News are also reporting that a fee has been agreed!
The Eagles made an enquiry for the 22-year-old after they won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
Barry Fry told the South London Press earlier today that Palace were one of a dozen clubs to register an interest in Gayle: ‘We don’t want him to go. He is on a four-year contract but so many clubs are in for him that it is very difficult for us to stop a player from League One moving to the Premier League.
‘It has got to be a good offer – then we’d reluctantly let him go to the Premier League.
‘If the deal is not right he won’t go anywhere.
‘He has got four years left but we are honourable people. We keep our best players as long as we can but if we get a good offer then we will listen to it. We’ve done that with all our players. The difference here is that Dwight is on a much longer contract.
‘He is the best player I’ve had – by 100 miles. Just look at his goals – right foot, left foot and head.’
Talksport are reporting that the player was seen at Palace`s Beckenham training ground today [Thursday, 27th June].
Hopefully this is nothing but a rumour as Posh are far better off with Gayle in their starting line-up than having cash in the bank and struggling on the pitch. I know the usual noises will come out of London Road if Gayle is sold but Gayle is a very special player and someone who will be very, very difficult to replace.
