Peterborough United have transfer listed their star defender Gaby Zakuani after he rejected a new three year contract !

The DR Congo international has been at Posh for nearly five years following his move from Premiership Fulham for £500,000. He has made over 150 appearances for the club and has put everything on the line; even playing with broken bones!

It was a tough decision for the former Posh Player of the Year but he is desperate to play at the highest level possible especially now he has re-established himself in the DR Congo squad as he said: “I have spent five very happy years at Peterborough, but I am a very ambitious person and I want to play as high as I can in my career.

“My international career is very important to me and it was a real honour to represent my country in the African Cup of Nations. I want to continue playing for my country and feel I have to give myself every chance of being selected by the national coach. I have always given 100 per cent for the cause and this was a very difficult decision for me to make.”

Zakuani is expected to make further appearances for his country in the upcoming World Cup matches.

His name has been circulated to other clubs after Posh reluctantly placed him on the transfer list after he advised them that he wouldn`t be signing the three year contract that he has just been offered.

He has one year left on his contract but now he has refused a new contract, Posh will try to find a new club for him ahead of the forthcoming 2013/14 campaign.

Although Zakuani is a born tackler and often leaves the playing field with the opposition in his back pocket, he is not the most comfortable player with the ball at his feet. If Zakuani does move on, it will free up more cash which is needed now Posh find themselves back in League One but there are players in the squad that can fill Zakuani`s boots. Nat Knight-Percival had a decent first campaign at Posh and although he`s not the best header of the ball, he is confident with the ball on the ground.

Many Posh fans will be sad to see their idol leave the club but many have already said that if Posh do have to lose any of their prize assets, Zakuani is the one we could replace easier.
